Aspendale Primary School

SCHOOL PROFILE

Our vision

"Learning For Life" ensures that every student is equipped with the transferable knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing and globally connected world.

Our mission

Our mission is to provide a high quality, supportive and engaging learning program which builds the academic, social and emotional capacity of every student at our primary school.
We aim to develop lifelong learners who care for themselves, others and the community around them, and actively contribute to a more sustainable and peaceful world.

Our Core Values

Of Passion, Respect, Integrity, Commitment and Empathy guide how we teach, learn and interact at Aspendale Primary School.

General

Aspendale Primary School is located on a large, picturesque site in a well-established residential beachside suburb on Port Phillip Bay, 27 km south-east of Melbourne, close to public transport, parklands and recreational facilities. Students are drawn from the local and wider Aspendale community, which the school has served since 1925.

Our students learn in a supportive personalised school environment, with access to a full and outstanding range of programs across all areas of the Victorian Curriculum. At Aspendale Primary School we provide students with learning experiences that are engaging, relevant, challenging and significant, in learning environments that are stimulating and provocative. We provide students with opportunities to build meaning and refine understanding, through explicit teaching sessions and structured inquiry. There is a strong focus on Mathematics and English as well as developing higher-order thinking skills, design and digital technology skills and creativity. In 2018 APS became an accredited IB World School, the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) underpins our approach to teaching and learning.  Over a year, each year level inquiries into each of the six PYP transdisciplinary themes. These themes allow local and global issues to be incorporated into the curriculum and effectively allow students to `step up¿ beyond the confines of learning within subject areas.

Our staffing profile comprises of an essential mix of experience, passion and gender balance. In 2024 we have 23 straight classes.  Our students also benefit from a full range of specialist programs, including Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Physical Education and Chinese Mandarin. When international students enrol in our school we encourage them to fully participate in all our school programs.

Teams also take on a number of whole school events such as our biannual Lit Fest, STEM Night, Art Show and Performance Fortnight (school production). A range of extra curricula activities are provided, including school band, choirs, swimming program, camps, excursions, incursions, one-on-one or group music tuition and large variety of extra curricula (Enrichment) lunchtime clubs. The school also benefits from a strong partnership with our sister school Xuri Jing Cheng School.

Aspendale Primary School has an extensive student leadership team which provides opportunities for students to undertake a variety of roles and be active members of our school community. The school also has a Student Representative Council with representatives from each grade in Years 3-6.

The school has a very active and supportive parent community with parents assisting in classrooms, the canteen, school council, various committees, excursions and camps.

1. Evidence of high standards and expertise in First Aid, with a strong commitment to professional learning.

2. Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication including the ability to utilise computer software products effectively.

3. High level ability to work cooperatively and to a professional standard with all members of a school community - parents, students, staff.

4. Demonstrated experience in supporting children and adults in a caring and compassionate manner yet maintaining professionalism and discretion.

5. Evidence of experience in effective school records management, activity and injury recording, assessment and care planning.

6. Demonstrated ability in medical emergency management and procedures.

Role

Attendance during school holiday periods is not required.

An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Certification and/or qualifications of up to three years can be required at this level (noting that Registered Nurse is not included at this level, the first level for which is Level 1 range 3).

A role at this range may include:

  • Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes. Typically, this will involve accountability for a single function, (e.g. ensuring data is properly maintained) or the co-ordination of a work area under the direction of the principal or a manager.
  • Assisting teachers, within an educational program, by undertaking specific support tasks or the coordination of the support function.
  • Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles (e.g. enrolled nurses performing the role as described in schedule 3). These roles require specific qualifications and/or training, including roles where further training must be undertaken from time to time. The role is for a specific purpose, for which there will be direct accountability as opposed to support roles that are carried out by a range of staff performing routine tasks under direction.
  • Technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements where there are clear guidelines and limited options. Routine technical support in libraries, science, and information technology would be typical examples.

An education support class position at this range commencing at the base will initially be limited to undertaking routine tasks that are carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established, and direction is readily available. Subject to any specific qualification and/or training requirement, an education support class employee employed in this range may be progressively required to undertake coordination, specialised student/teacher support tasks, or technical tasks as experience in the role is gained.
