Job description

Your Role: 

Be a tradie in the Navy ensuring ships or submarines are kept in peak working order, by maintaining, diagnosing, and operating engineering systems and machinery. As a Marine Technician you will specialise in electrical, hull, or propulsion.  

Whether you already have a trade, you're an apprentice, or you have no experience at all, you'll be paid from day one. You'll gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job trade training and work towards a Certificate III in your accredited trade, with opportunities to obtain further qualifications (up to and including a Diploma). You may also be able to use your existing qualifications and be eligible for recognition of prior learning.

Explore the specialisations below: 

  • Electrical: Maintain the ship’s electrical power, generation and distribution systems, including, alternators, batteries, charging systems, electrical switchboards, lighting systems, and corrosion protection systems.  
     
  • Hull: Be responsible for welding and fabrication of the ship’s hull and structural fittings, and maintain the ship’s auxiliary systems, like the freshwater generation plants, generators, stabilisers, and air compressors. 
     
  • Propulsion: Operate engineering systems and conduct maintenance to ensure that engines, gas turbines, mechanical systems, propellers, gearboxes, and steering systems remain serviceable.

Submariner:  

There is also the option to specialise as a Marine Technician Submariner and be a part of the most exclusive and stable workforce in Australia. Your role will be to operate, repair and conduct maintenance on the submarine’s machinery, engines, power, and ventilation systems to ensure the vessel runs at optimum capacity, working at sea and ashore.  

Salary:  
Upon completion of your initial military and employment training, you’ll enjoy a salary package starting from $77,451 for surface fleet and $90,437 for submariners.
