Job description

The University of Sydney is investing in Advancement, and this is a particularly exciting time for you to join the team as we gear up for our next big philanthropic campaign and enter a significant growth phase.

Philanthropy requires thought, passion and action. It involves creating social impact and caring enough about the needs of others to help. Generosity worldwide has initiated ground-breaking research, provided millions of educational opportunities and built stronger communities. This is the power of giving.

About the Role

As a Fundraising Officer, Brain and Mind Centre, you will be responsible for raising major financial gifts that will support The University's Brain and Mind Centre. Transforming Brain and Mind health with world leading research, The Brain and Mind Centre is a global leader in research. It amalgamates a vast collective of expertise to create large-scale research teams addressing child development, youth mental health, alongside ageing and neurodegeneration.

You will be an integral member of Multidisciplinary team within The Advancement Portfolio, developing relationships with high-net-worth donors, connecting their passions with work that would otherwise not be undertaken, or education and outreach opportunities to support the next generation of leaders and thinkers. You will build strong internal relationships with leaders to understand how their critical work can be aligned with donor passions. You would be a part of lifting the profile of philanthropy across the institution.

With support from across the team, you will build relationships through face-to-face meetings with donors, alumni and friends of the University. The most unexpected conversations will lead to great things. Your work could give a student the opportunity to study at the oldest university in Australia thanks to a donation towards scholarship support, or support research of gender equality research at work, or equip Indigenous small business owners for success. Your work will not only have a huge impact but will also be considered one of the best things the donor and you, as a fundraiser, have ever achieved during your lifetime.

Working in the Advancement portfolio for the University of Sydney you will be part of a team that has supported:

  • Saving the agricultural industry an estimated $600 million a year thanks to breeding rust resistant wheat
  • Uncovering how cannabis can be used to treat epilepsy, mental health, pain, insomnia and neurodegenerative diseases
  • Thriving student start-ups, including Carapac, which uses biodegradable plastic made from prawn shells and spider silk protein to replace the eco-unfriendly plastics currently used in agriculture
  • More than 230 student musicians and educators travelling to regional areas, performing in schools, leading workshops and mentoring young musicians in 40 regional towns
  • Development of a new building that brings all our medicine and health disciplines into a single space supporting multidisciplinary research and teaching

About you
The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Fundraising Officer, Brain and Mind Centrewho:

  • Is a natural relationship builder - you enjoy interacting with people one-on-one and fostering relationships with people at different levels and from different cultures
  • has excellent communication skills, both listening and written in order to develop compelling proposals that align to a prospective donor's interests
  • is strategic in their vision and can plan months, sometimes even years in advance
  • has highly developed emotional intelligence - you are self-aware with exceptional interpersonal skills
  • is a high-achiever and naturally driven by success both professionally and personally
  • is interested in how the brain works, mental health, child development and neurodegeneration.
