About Metro Trains Sydney (MTS)

MTS is now in its fifth year of operating Australia’s first fully automated passenger railway, the Sydney Metro North-West line, and will soon be extending this Metro line through to the City and Southwest. We connect our customers to opportunities that matter to them while delivering the next generation of rail travel to Sydney.


We have an opportunity for an experienced and pragmatic General ManagerPeople and Culture to lead our People and Culture function. Reporting into the Chief Executive Officer, this newly created role will provide dual operational and strategic focus across key areas in our People and Culture teams and the wider business.

The position will be the driver of initiatives and tools to enhance the performance of people, embed cultural change around the MTS values and to work with leaders to support enabling our people to be their very best, instilling a mindset of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Build strong and productive working relationships with Metro Trains Sydney executives and leaders, and drive a customer-focused, business partnering service ethos across all areas of People & Culture, ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of all human resources services.
  • Provide quality advice, counsel, guidance and support to MTS leaders, and the employees across the full range of the human resources function, including employee and industrial relations matters.
  • Ensure leaders are supported and equipped with the skills to manage and drive localised human resources matters and initiatives to meet strategic objectives and build their human resources capability and coach leaders P&C though the resolution of human resource issues.
  • Plan and lead negotiation, both individual and collective with industrial organisations, demonstrating solid knowledge of and skills in the collective bargaining process and its legislative requirements as well as a strong understanding of the impact of IR issues.
  • Act as a key lead in close collaboration with the GM Operations & Customer Experience in liaison with the relevant unions on employment matters including advisory support and interpretation of industrial agreements and FWA Employment legislative matters.
  • Work with the Chief Executive Officer and executive peers to understand current and future organisational needs and develop an organisational strategy that aligns with Metro Trains Sydney’s needs and objectives.

About You 

You have extensive demonstrated experience in senior leadership roles, ideally gained in the Transport sector. You have led medium to large-scale teams across the People and Culture function, coupled with strong experience in Industrial Relations (IR).

A superior communicator and collaborator, you have the ability to influence, develop and foster strong relationships across all stakeholder levels, driving positive change and outcomes. Client-centric, you understand the complexities of transformation projects while delivering on business objectives and goals.
