The Opportunity

As a key leadership role and a member of the Executive team, the General Manager - People and Performance will help develop and execute human resource strategy to support diverse teams operating nationally.  

This role will bring together the operational human resources function to develop strategic capability in areas such as organisational leadership and development, talent management and acquisition, industrial relations, workforce planning, people experience and benefits, to optimise our services to internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the overall direction of the department, specifically in the areas of talent acquisition, learning and development, employee experience / engagement, employee and industrial relations, HR planning and strategic direction including:  
    • Development of best practice approaches across all elements of People and Performance functions; 
    • Ensure that workforce policies, procedure and processes  are current and tailored to the needs of a diverse workforce;
    • Development of Manager inductions, mandatory training, career progression and performance reviews;  
    • Collaborate on WHS intiviates including employee safety and rehabilitation frameworks; and
    • Maintenance and development of HRIS and related systems.
  • Provide education and training to Managers on interpretation and changes to legislation and decisions from Commissions and tribunals, which may affect business operations. 
  • Manage and respond to complex employee complaints and incidents whereby issues are resolved, learning and improvement occurs, and risks are managed and mitigated into the future. 
  • Lead organisational change initiatives across Youturn, ensuring consultative obligations are met, to support employees and managers with successful implementation of change. 
  • Lead the development and implementation of organisational wide strategy to advance diversity and inclusion across the workforce and developing plans to meet grant-approving agency's strategy, targets and objectives.
  • Provide accurate, concise reporting concerning HR and industrial matters to the CEO and Executive each month, and when required, to the Board.

Essential Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualification and/or expertise and experience in Human Resource Management or Employment Law.  
  • Minimum 5+ years in senior roles in a medium-sized organisation, leading a human resources / industrial relations portfolio. 
  • Experience coaching and mentoring executive leaders to support a performance, learning and HR culture.  
  • Expert application of Australian industrial relations instruments including the Fair Work Act and related Modern Awards.  
  • Experience and confidence in providing advice and feedback to senior management on their own HR approaches and communications.  

Selection Criteria:

  • Substantial experience with the Australian industrial relations framework, including employment-related legislation, anti-discrimination human rights, employment and workplace health and safety, and experience in the development, review, interpretation and application of HR policies and procedures, awards and industrial instruments/agreements. 
  • Substantial experience in managing employee relations activities, including grievances, disputes and workplace conflict, disciplinary processes, and staff consultation and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated strong people relationship and leadership skills at a senior level within a dynamic and changing organisational climate, and the capacity to drive change through positive communication, engagement and negotiation skills.
  • Experience in developing and championing a strong organisational culture that is inclusive, transparent and trusting and supports a compelling Employee Value Proposition to attract and retain quality staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose strategic human resource, employee relations and organisational issues and to develop and implement appropriate initiatives to drive improvement.

Other Requirements

  • Successful applicants will also need to hold a ‘C’ class Open driver licence, State Working with Children Check and hold, or be eligible to apply for, a Licensed Care Suitability Check issued by the QLD Department of Child Safety, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs.
