The General Managers in the Superannuation Division work in collaboration with the Executive Director, Superannuation as a Leadership team.
The position takes a leadership role in anticipating, identifying and addressing strategic superannuation risks in the pursuit of APRA's mandate and within APRA's supervision framework.
Organisational environment
The Superannuation Division is responsible for the prudential supervision of the trustees of superannuation funds in Australia.
The division comprises supervisory teams, specialist teams and a strategy and operations team that operate across the country.
Supervisory teams are supported by our specialist teams and partners across APRA. Specialist teams in member outcomes (performance tests) and investment risk (liquidity, stress testing) analyse data and information, conduct thematic reviews across superannuation funds, and provide advice and support to enable supervisory teams to fulfil their supervisory function. The strategy and operations team is accountable for industry strategy development, superannuation business priorities and business management support.
The role engages with Divisions across APRA with key partners such as Supervision Assurance, Legal Enforcement, Resolution and Policy Development.
The role is a member of the Superannuation Executive Leadership team reporting to the Executive Director Superannuation.
Key accountabilities
- People leadership. Lead a team of professionals to deliver high quality outcomes, fostering an inclusive environment that creates a sense of belonging and trust and allows people to actively contribute and reach their full potential.
- Strategic management. Develop and implement business plans for the Division to ensure they support APRA's strategic, business and operational objectives and priorities.
- Critical thinking and judgement. Leading the identification of risk in complex, uncertain and volatile situations, developing solutions by applying sound judgement, and thinking broadly and holistically about the problems to be solved. Ability to take a whole of system perspective and apply critical thinking in ambiguity.
- Relationship management. Effectively represent APRA and proactively develop constructive relationships with a wide range of external stakeholders, including Government, industry stakeholders and international regulators, and at local and international forums in a manner that enhances APRA's reputation.
- Stakeholder management. Build trusted and constructive relationships with key stakeholders across APRA to understand requirements, identify issues early and deliver high value outcomes.
- Business/operational management. Champion the APRA mission and values and translate that into the team's operational approach that is risk based and outcomes focused. Oversee APRA's workforce capacity and capability. Drive operational effectiveness and simplification in the delivery of the organisation's ongoing business and change initiatives.
- External. Develop close networks, both locally and internationally and represent APRA at relevant superannuation industry forums.
Demonstrated competencies
- Deep superannuation industry experience.
- Leadership and management capabilities at senior/executive level.
- Proven relationship building, negotiation and influencing capability at enterprise level.
- Fosters an inclusive environment that creates a sense of belonging and trust, enables people to actively contribute, and to reach their full potential.
- Demonstrated ability to identify strategic issues and develop and implement appropriate solutions.
- Strong personal integrity and an intuitive understanding of what is reasonable and prudent business practice.
- Adept at leading in the face of uncertainty and facilitates understanding of complex circumstances to gain support and agreement.
Beneficial competencies
- Sound understanding of the principles of prudential regulation and financial sector risks would be beneficial, but not essential.
- Experience in managing a complex and wide-ranging portfolio of programs and projects particularly in the data space.
