The Role
As the GM,Policy, Advocacy & Government Relations, you will lead the policy and advocacy initiatives and drive change in the health, disability, aged care, early childhood, education, and justice sectors.
Providing essential support and guidance to the CEO, Board and small team, your role is pivotal in influencing national and jurisdiction policies, engaging with government officials, and creating strategic alliances to benefit the speech pathology profession.
The Person
You’ll deeply understand government processes and structures, ideally within health. You’ll exhibit exceptional communication, research, and analytical skills with the ability to build strong Government Relationships and external networks. You’ll drive change through evidence-based policy initiatives and have the gravitas to represent SPA in various forums and meetings.
As a manager of a small and competent team of experienced Policy Officer's your leadership style will be supportive, collaborative and inclusive. You'll have high EQ and clear and transparent communication with the ability to empower the team to own and drive their workloads whilst allowing them to feel valued and heard.
An understanding of the health and/or not-for-profit sector is key to the success of this role.
Duties
- Develop high-impact advocacy strategies to influence national and jurisdiction policies
- Provide policy briefings to ensure key messages are effectively communicated
- Ensure advocacy positions are data-driven and evidence-based
- Build and foster Government Relations and networks
- Identify and promote alliances supporting the Association's objectives
- Prepare high-quality submissions and responses, drawing on the expertise of SPA staff and members
- Consult with Association members and stakeholders to inform policy development
- Attend meetings with the CEO and represent SPA at various forums and meetings
- Proven experience in Government Relations and in-depth knowledge of government structures and processes
- Confidence in engaging with senior government and external executives
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent research and analytical skills
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and build collaborative relationships
- Exceptional planning, organisational, and time management skills
- Experience in policy roles related to health, mental health, education, early childhood, disability, or ageing
