The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (the Assembly) is the voice of Aboriginal people in Victoria in the next stage of the Treaty process. It is made up of Victorian Traditional Owners, elected by Aboriginal Communities, for Aboriginal Communities, to advance our rights, interests and benefits.
The Assembly’s objective is to promote the self-determination and empowerment of Traditional Owners and Aboriginal Victorians through the Treaty process by:
- Acting as the First Peoples’ Representative Body to negotiate and agree Statewide Treaty and Interim Agreements,
- Acting as the Aboriginal Representative Body to support Treaty negotiations (including administering the Self-Determination Fund),
- Enabling Traditional Owners and Aboriginal Victorians to exercise sovereignty, the right to self-determination and other rights; including those contained in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

THE ROLEThe Government Affairs Lead holds primary responsibility for developing and executing the Assembly’s political engagement strategy in alignment with the Assembly’s negotiation approach.
KEY DUTIES- Develop and execute a comprehensive political engagement strategy in line with the Assembly’s negotiation approach.
- Establish and foster key relationships across councils, parliament, government, and communities, engaging them in meaningful discussions on development and implementation of the Assembly’s priorities.
- Provide strategic advice to the CEO and Council on political and public affairs matters affecting the Assembly.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align political engagement efforts with Assembly’s objectives and the impact of government decisions.
- Represent the Assembly in meetings and discussions with government officials, ministerial contacts, other stakeholders, and not-for-profit organisations.
- Develop relationships with non-government organisations to build coalitions of support.
- Monitor policy development and the legislative landscapes, identifying opportunities and risks.
- Proven experience in a senior political engagement, policy or other government role, with a deep understanding of political dynamics in Victoria.
- Strong understanding of internal workings of government, including political and parliamentary processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and relationship-building skills, with a track record of influencing key stakeholders to achieve outcomes.
- Exceptional project management skills and experience in working in cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in a similar role.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Victorian Aboriginal Communities and organisations.
- Demonstrated skill and capacity to work effectively and with integrity in the context of a Victorian Traditional Owner Representative Body.

- Salary from $129,379 per annum (full-time equivalent) plus superannuation plus salary packaging, based on experience and expertise.
