An exciting opportunity has become available for a Government Relations lead for Major Projects to join the Customer and Stakeholder Engagement team within Sydney Water.

The role leads Sydney Water’s reputation management, and garners Government and Parliament support and advocacy for the organisation’s Major Projects to deliver the Long Term Capital and Operational Plan. The role presents Sydney Water as highly responsive, transparent and identifies and mitigates risks to projects and reputation. It influences support of Major Projects through channels including briefings with Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, the Legislative Council and other elected officials and staff.

The role also facilitates strong and effective working relationships with and advice to internal and other external stakeholders to promote Sydney Water as an innovative business and position it for continued success to deliver its once in a generation capital investment plan. Works closely with major project directors and managers as well as with leads across the Government, Stakeholder and Community function.

Responsibilities:

  • Provision of regular strategic insights, expert advice and reporting on government priorities as they relate to the positioning and direction of Sydney Water Major Projects and capital investment.
  • Work effectively, build trust and represent Sydney Water’s Major Projects interests with the policy advisors in the Minister’s office as well as the advisors and senior staff of other Cabinet Ministers.
  • Maintain and grow Sydney Water’s reputation and ensure relevant internal stakeholders are kept abreast of emerging issues, trends and opportunities to influence Major Projects outcomes.
  • Lead the preparation of briefing materials and engagement programs related to Major Projects and capital investment for government stakeholders, including the Portfolio Minister’s office and Members of Parliament.
  • Proactively respond to Ministerial and Parliamentary enquiries related to Major Projects in a highly effective and timely manner, including coordinating inputs into Cabinet and Expenditure Review Committee Submissions, compulsory acquisitions, and preparation for Managing Director and Executive meetings with Ministers.
  • Develop and implement fit-for-purpose systems that enable consistent and effective communication between Sydney Water and its key Government stakeholders related to Major Projects and long term capital investment, ensuring they are successfully embedded and adopted by key users.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Formal qualification in communications, public affairs, journalism, public policy, political science, economics, business or a related field or relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 10-12 years’ experience in Government Relations, policy, public affairs and or communications in a Ministerial office, Electorate office, corporation, government department.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and providing advice on the socio-political environment to senior management, the Minister and Members of Parliament, local or federal government.
  • Demonstrated and high level conceptual and innovative problem-solving skills for managing conflicting priorities and developing, implementing and monitoring recommendations and advice on policies, strategies and solutions across complex areas.
  • Excellent understanding of Government Relations at the state and local level with good networks and trusted relationships within government.
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising and negotiating with senior executives and advising on approaches to stakeholder engagement and building constructive, trusted and effective relationships.
  • Experience and comfort working in a fast moving and high-pressure working environment with competing priorities, characterised by tight and at times, unexpected deadlines
