Job description

Introducing All G Foods – revolutionising the future of food

Hello! Welcome to All G Foods, a first-of-its-kind biotechnology company based in Sydney, Australia that is transforming the future of dairy.

Our mission is simple: to create animal-free dairy products that are as familiar and delicious as they are sustainable.

Our commitment is simpler: no animals, no extra land and a firm dedication to preserving water.

How we do it is a little more complex: through the extraordinary realm of biotech and cutting-edge precision fermentation technology, we’re unlocking the potential of nature-identical dairy proteins.

What we can achieve through the power of innovation extends beyond food and beverage to encompass nutraceuticals, infant nutrition and everything in between. We believe we can feed all people, all over the world in a delicious, healthy, sustainable and ethical way. The food revolution is in our hands and we're making it all good

Job Overview:

Reporting to: Chief Scientific Officer

As a recognised expert in Synthetic Biology, you lead the execution of systems biology methodologies in the domain of strain engineering. This entails overseeing the scientific trajectory and management of the metabolic engineering team, harnessing the capabilities of our proprietary high-throughput automated biofoundry. In this capacity, close collaboration with the protein science, data science, and fermentation teams is imperative. Additionally, active involvement in our recently instituted four-year, $4 million government-endorsed trailblazer initiative in collaboration with the University of Queensland is integral to your role.

About You

With a foundation in Synthetic Biology and metabolic engineering, you possess practical proficiency in executing methodologies to achieve targeted metrics through formulating, constructing, and evaluating strains and metabolic pathways within microorganisms. Maintaining current awareness of advancements in the field, you exhibit strong interpersonal qualities, functioning effectively as a team player within our culture that prioritises the development and delivery of world-class, world-first products. Your track record includes successful leadership of multidisciplinary project teams, and you excel in client relationship management and communication, demonstrating a high degree of discretion and sensitivity in handling confidential matters. Your robust business acumen enables sound judgment and prompt decision-making.

In this role, you will:

Lead the day-to-day management and scientific direction of the metabolic engineering team.

  • Lead the implementation of systems biology approaches to strain engineering at All G Foods.
  • Work closely with the CSO to drive the scientific strategy of strain engineering.
  • Work collaboratively with the other teams and coordinate with external collaborators, partners and vendors.
  • Prepare and present scientific results and relevant IP opportunities to stakeholders.
  • Supervise and mentor junior research staff and/or PhD students.
  • Undertake any ad-hoc projects and other activities as needed by the business. Perform such work activities relevant to the role’s key accountabilities as approved by the Research manager.

Essential skills and education:

  • A PhD in metabolic engineering, Synthetic Biology, systems biology or a related discipline with 5-10 years post-PhD experience.
  • Significant demonstrable experience to reach targeted metrics through design, construction and testing of strains and metabolic pathways in microorganisms, for example but not limited to E. coli, S. cerevisiae, P. pastoris, K. lactis, Y. lipolytica and T. reesei.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced and forever changing environment. You will be able to align research strategies with company goals; and have a good grasp on the risk/benefit assessment of proposed projects and timeline.
  • Demonstratable experience in systems biology workflows, including but not limited to metabolic modelling, fluxomics and bioinformatics.
  • Hands on experience with Synthetic Biology and strain engineering techniques such as vector design, PCR, Gibson Assembly, restriction digestion, ligation, homologous recombination and promoter selection.
  • Track record of successful supervision of junior research staff and/or PhD/MSc students.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day-to-day operational matters.
  • Working understanding of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation, including Safe Laboratory Practices, as applicable to the work environment.

Desirable:

  • Bioprocess optimisation
  • Grant writing to obtain external funding
  • Usage of high-throughput robotics and analytics.
