Position Information 

Irrawang High School is proudly a comprehensive High School catering for students from Years 7-12, including support classes, with a strong focus on academic excellence and positive wellbeing.

The school is located on Worimi land in East Raymond Terrace in the lower Hunter Region. In 2024, a total enrolment of 903 students, 20% of whom identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander attend Irrawang High School. The school prides itself on nurturing strong connections and relationships with a proactive Parent Advisory Group and Youyoong AECG.

There is a strong emphasis on positive behaviour for learning, through a culture of connectedness and embedded values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. The school provides a learning environment that aims to give each student the opportunity to achieve their highest potential through the development of the whole student.

The English faculty’s success is growing through student interest in studying HSC English Advanced, with the 2023 HSC cohort being the strongest results for many years, and results improving each year. Students are offered opportunities to be involved in debating, the Premier’s Reading Challenge, as well as excursions and incursions relating to the English syllabus such as Bell Shakespeare performances, English Teacher Association study days and live performances of texts. The English faculty team is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and has energetically introduced the new Years 7 to 10 syllabus with positivity and a growth mindset. 

The school offers a wide array of programs and extra-curricular activities to assist and support students and families. With a strong focus on academic, creative, social, cultural and sporting domains of learning, we cater for the strengths of all students.

  
Specific Selection Criteria 

Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria,

1. Approval to teach English (7-12) with demonstrated evidence of exceptional classroom practice and a strong understanding of the needs of students presenting for the HSC in Advanced English and English Extension courses.

2.  Well-developed understanding of current evidence-based pedagogical practices, with demonstrated ability to lead the implementation of high-quality teaching-learning programs that result in student engagement and growth.

3. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to build and sustain a cohesive team with diverse teaching experience who are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and continual improvement. 

4. Proven capacity to dynamically work as a productive member of the executive team to analyse data and to lead, implement and support whole school priorities and initiatives in the school’s Strategic Improvement Plan.

  
General Selection Criteria 

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice

2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs

3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams

4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents

5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning

6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
