The Mine Safety Inspectorate, Metals and Petroleum team at the NSW Resources Regulator (part of the Mining, Exploration & Geoscience group) are looking for an Inspector of Mines to join the team.

What are we looking for?

The focus of the role is to verify that effective risk management and incident prevention strategies are implemented in the NSW mining industry through site inspections, assessments, investigation of incidents and complaints, application of compliance powers, consultation and education.

To be successful in the role, you will have the ability to gain trust and support from various key stakeholders through your effective relationship building and excellent communication skills. Your collaboration skills will be required in this role as you will be working with peers regularly.

In your new role as an Inspector of Mines, you will focus on NSW Metalliferous and Extractive Mines verifying that effective risk management and incident prevention strategies are implemented through site inspections, assessments, investigation of incidents and complaints, application of compliance powers, consultation, and education.

Your experience in working in a dynamic environment, being able to positively respond to unexpected changes and effectively re-prioritising deliverables will be highly valued.

Your mining expertise will be put to good use as your responsibilities will include:

  • Building relationships with internal / external stakeholders
  • Assessing mine operator’s health and safety systems
  • Undertaking announced and unannounced mine inspections which includes preparing assessment and inspection reports to inform operators of their compliance status
  • Completing assessments based on incidents and complaints
  • Preparing notices of advice, regulatory enforcement, compliance and prohibition
  • Following through to ensure that corrective actions are adequately addressed

This role will give you the opportunity to contribute to a positive change in the mining industry.

You’ll need to:

  • have proven experience at an engineering or manager level in mining including the ability to exercise the key statutory functions of either a mining engineer manager at an underground mine other than a coal mine or a quarry manager, as specified in the NSW Work Health and Safety (Mines & Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2014 Schedule 10, Part 4 and 5.
  • possess and maintain the qualifications to be appointed as an inspector under section 18(2)(a) of the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013, and in accordance with the Resources Regulator policy on qualifications of mine safety inspectors.
  • be able to work on weekends and backshifts and respond to incidents out of normal business hours on a rostered basis.
  • hold and maintain a current Class C driver licence

Things to know about the role:

  • Compliance with pre-employment probity screening is mandatory and a condition of engagement.
  • Appointment will be subject to the satisfactory participation in a pre-employment health assessment.
