This role will provide support to other Instrument Technicians within the team in our department. You will also liaise between Peter Mac and the RMH CSSD (within the Decontamination Aspect).Please note Peter Mac does NOT have its own dedicated CSSD department. Peter Mac has a small, specialised Instrument Technician team who perform tasks including scope processing, decontamination and surgical set-ups.Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is home to 8 Operating Theatres, including Endoscopy. The Department covers a variety of specialities including Plastics/Breast, General surgery, Gynaecology/Brachy, Urology, Robotic, Head and Neck, Colorectal, Vascular & Upper GI. Your responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to);
· Collect, clean and decontaminate Scope Equipment used by the Operating Suite and Clinical units on a daily basis.
· Load and unload the STERIS/ECOLAB AFER (according to instructions and general duties list).
· Inspect and Decant items as required within the Decontamination Room.· Prepare Operating Theatre set-ups for the following days surgeries.
· Assist with the De-Boxing Room
· Liaise with RMH when sending Dirty Instruments to their CSSD. Also Liaise with RMH when receiving the clean instruments each morning.
· Place clean Instruments & Steri-Peel in their Correct Locations within the day.ABOUT YOU: PREREQUISITE
As an outstanding Instrument Technician, your skills will include:
· Instrument technician qualification, Certificate III or IV (or equivalent) from an accredited institution
· A minimum of 12 months experience working as an Instrument Technician is desirable
· Must be able to undertake work of a more complex nature within established procedures and guidelines

SkillsEssential Requirements
  • Completed Certificate 3 in Sterilisation or Certificate 3 in Health Services Assistance with 12 months experience

  • Ability to take initiative in prioritising workload
  • Neat personal presentation and hygiene
Desirable Requirements
  • Experience in an endoscopy department
  • Experience in CSSD
  • Experience in an operating suite environment
Key Accountabilities1. Collect, scan and rinse reusable reprocessed items for reprocessing by MH and load into CSSD trolleys in accordance with AS/NZS 4187.
  • To be physically able to perform the duties as required, using appropriate methods and techniques.
  • To maintain an accepted standard of performance to ensure a clean uncluttered environment.
  • Ensure all reusable items are collected from the operating theatres.
  • Ensure all reusable items are scanned into Censitrac.
  • Rinse all reusable items removing all gross contaminates and placing them back into their relevant containers.
  • Place all reusable items and containers into the MH CSSD trolley for transport to MH CSSD.
  • Document and report any anomalies or items requiring repair.
  • Ensure all service areas are free from dirt, grime and dust.
  • Restock as required.
  • Assist other Instrument Technicians and clinical staff with other activities within the agreed scope.
2. Clean process and maintain flexible endoscopes according to the requirements of the operating lists and GENCA guidelines.
  • Respond in a timely manner to the maintenance and care of the flexible endoscopes in both the operating suite and outpatients department.
  • Respond in timely manner to cleaning and preparation of flexible endoscopes required for the operating lists and outpatient clinics.
  • Carry out all duties in a manner that fulfills the vision and values of Peter Mac.
  • Accept responsibility for the standards of work achieved.
  • Escalate workload concerns and or unfinished work to the supervisor of the team to seek assistance in a timely manner.
  • Display a willingness to learn.
  • Assist other Instrument Technicians and clinical staff with other activities within the agreed scope.
3. Management of consumables and reprocessed sterile items in relation to checking, unpacking and stocking
  • To be physically able to perform the duties as required, using appropriate methods and techniques.
  • Assist with the unloading of reprocessed reusable items and containers from MH CSSD.
  • Adhere to AS4187 in the storage, stock rotation and handling of reprocessed reusable items and sterile consumables.
  • Ensure all stock and supply storage areas are stocked to correct levels.
  • Assist with Ordering consumables/supplies as required.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Provide clear and concise communication with all staff in the process of performing duties.
  • Provide urgent supply services as requested.
  • Assist other Instrument Technicians and clinical staff with other activities within the agreed scope.

  • Ensure all required set ups for operating lists are completed in a timely manner 100% of the time.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating surgeon preference cards.
  • Ensure sterile cores are restocked at all times.
  • Assist clinical staff in locating urgent supplies in a timely manner.
  • Remove and report any out of date, damaged and/or unusual items.
  • Ensure all service areas are free from dirt, grime and dust, both high and low.
  • Assist other Instrument Technicians and clinical staff with other activities within the agreed scope.
