Job description

Western Australia is a great place to live and teach.  Our public schools are all across our vast state, offering you opportunities to live and teach in incredible locations.

Our purpose is clear:  every student, every classroom, every day.

Come and join us.

The Department of Education is inviting applications from qualified teachers to relocate to Western Australia and are seeking to teach in schools in regional locations around the state. We are currently accepting applications from teachers who are citizens of:

  • United Kingdom
  • Republic of Ireland
  • South Africa
  • Canada

Teaching in Western Australian public schools comes with great benefits.  You can expect:

  • a great salary – and we will consider your international teaching experience when determining your commencement salary
  • fully funded relocation support for you and your family (for permanent positions or contracts 12 months or more). This includes airfares and travel, and relocating your furniture and effects
  • fully funded accommodation support for up to 8 weeks - depending on the location of your appointment
  • access to heavily subsidised accommodation for you and your family, in most regional locations
  • additional financial incentives in some locations (up to $13,730 pa)
  • if relocating to Western Australia, reimbursement of essential household items of up to $10,000 (subject to approval)
  • a robust induction program

A number of our schools are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive in 2023, of up to $17,000 pa. You can find more about this here.

Apply to this pool if you:

  • are early childhood, primary, secondary or education support trained
  • are seeking to work as a teacher in regional Western Australian public schools
  • have a minimum of two years’ full time teaching experience as a qualified teacher gained in the past 5 years (for applicants requiring sponsorship)
  • meet one of the following:
    • Are a citizen of one of the nominated countries and require visa sponsorship to work in Western Australian public schools as a teacher
    • Live in one of the nominated countries and already hold independent working rights to work in Western Australia (and will require relocation support only)
    • Live in Australia and are a citizen of one of the nominated countries, and require visa sponsorship to work in Western Australian public schools as a teacher

Why work with us?

Western Australia is a large and diverse state from white sandy beaches, vineyards and forests in the south, tropical climate in the north to the arid red dirt of the outback. The variety of landscapes makes it the ideal location to explore and experience the relaxed outdoors Australian lifestyle.

Many of our teachers have taught in regional areas, and reflect on their time as one of the most enjoyable and beneficial parts of their career - both professionally and personally.   They tell us about the sense of community, the enhanced opportunities for career growth, and - most of all - they tell us about the children and young people they have worked with.

Cultural awareness and understanding is particularly important for teachers in regional areas. The Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework guides staff to incorporate culturally responsive practices and approaches when working with Aboriginal students, their families, and communities.

Students in rural communities are open, friendly and active. These characteristics are reflected in the dynamic and vibrant classroom environments found in regional schools. Strong parent-teacher relationships and supportive school environments are a feature of these schools and complement proactive approaches to managing student behaviour.

Teachers find joining local sporting clubs and participating in community events enhances their relationship with both students and parents. Teachers in regional schools report a high level of job satisfaction, enjoying the strong personal relationships they establish with students and parents and appreciative of the recognition they receive in the community.

You can find out more about the financial incentives for specific locations, using our benefits calculator here.

Eligibility

To teach in a Western Australian public school, you must have a recognised, completed initial teacher education qualification.  This may be a completed Bachelor of Education, or equivalent, or an undergraduate degree and a post-graduate teaching qualification.  Please note that the Department does not recognise the Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) certification where it is not held in conjunction with a suitable Initial Teacher Education qualification, awarded by a recognised university.

If you did not complete your teaching qualification in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Republic of Ireland or the United States of America, you will be required to demonstrate your English language skills, through an International English Language Testing System (Academic) (IELTS) test. Evidence of this is an eligibility requirement prior to submitting an application. The scores required are an average of level 7.5 or more across the 4 components of listening, speaking, reading and writing and no score below level 7 in any of those components and a score of level 8 or more in the components of speaking and listening.

Your working rights and how we can support you

Teachers with existing Australian working rights are encouraged to apply to this pool. Please make note in your application if you do not require visa sponsorship.

The Department of Education can provide visa sponsorship through an employer sponsored visa. An example of this is for appointment for up to 4 years on a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (482) for Early Childhood, Education Support and Secondary teachers, and 2 years for Primary teachers. This will allow you to live and work in Western Australia in your specified role and location, and also allow your spouse or partner full working rights as long as your visa is valid.

In order to be eligible for sponsorship you must have at least 2 years full time teaching experience as a qualified teacher gained in the past 5 years and meet the eligibility requirements outlined above.
