Chief Operating Officer Group | Integrity Security & Assurance | Security Branch | Security Investigations

Security Branch is responsible for developing, implementing and administering security policies and procedures that promote a secure and safe work environment for departmental workers while providing adequate protection for the department's information and assets.  

The Security Investigations section conducts assessments and investigations into alleged serious security incidents affecting the department's property, personnel and information in accordance with the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), the Australian Government Investigation Standards (AGIS) and departmental policies and procedures.

In addition, the section also maintains an e-Discovery capability to support investigations. The Systems Interrogations teams' primary function is to interrogate and perform e-discovery on a variety of departmental systems. Data is interrogated, extracted and collated in support of both internal and external security and integrity related investigations, with scope extending to departmental litigation and FOI enquiries.

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate/s will be passionate about security and have demonstrated practical experience. 

  • Sound working knowledge or ability to quickly acquire a good understanding of security frameworks and standards, including the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), the Information Security Manual (ISM) and internal security procedural instructions.  
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve, think strategically and research, investigate and analyse issues to recommend effective solutions.
  • The ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with key stakeholders to achieve protective security outcomes.
  • Self-driven and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to influence the key security outcomes across the Department of Home Affairs and ABF.
  • Applicants will have a strong work ethic and be skilled at working both within a team and independently, under limited supervision, and see work through to completion.

Duties and responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Assess security incidents within legislative, policy and legal frameworks.
  • Conduct security assessments/investigations as a means to determine the cause/s of a security incident and assess any resulting harm to the Department.
  • Identify vulnerabilities in the department's protective security systems/policies and recommend risk mitigations to address immediate or ongoing security risks.
  • Use a range of internal and external resources, and techniques to gather information and/or evidence to support decisions and recommendations. Including preparation of complex high quality written material on sensitive matters.
  • Work closely with business areas on recommendations for improving and strengthening departmental security policies and procedures.
  • Comply with mandatory reporting obligations in accordance with the PSPF and provide security awareness training and education services as required.

Additional information

This role requires the successful applicant to hold (or be willing to obtain within 12 months):

  • A current drivers licence.
  • A Certificate IV in Government (Investigation) or a Diploma in Government (Investigation).
     

Equivalent qualifications from an Australian law enforcement or security agencies will be accepted.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 2 (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
