Job Description
The News is looking for a self-motivated, research oriented and community passionate journalist to provide the primary coverage of the Naracoorte-Lucindale district and surrounding areas for its weekly newspaper.
The successful candidate will have a passion to cover local councils, and our four key cornerstone topics of healthcare, education, communication, and infrastructure.
Tasks Include
- Gathering and analysing facts and data about newsworthy events from interviews, papers, government announcements, attending press conferences/briefings, investigations, and research.
- Writing newsworthy stories/reports, opinions, commentaries, and feature stories of interest for the newspaper.
- Continuously generating fresh and relevant content for the newspaper to keep the community informed.
- Discussing relevant and topical news topics in the editorial columns of the newspaper.
- Making decisions about the articles/content of publication with other team member and managers.
- Ensure content for publication is in conformity with editorial policies and guidelines and the relevant laws.
- Reviewing copies for publication and editing to check accuracy, clarity, grammar, style, and format.
Skills Required
- Strong writing skills, and ability to convey information in a clear, concise, and conversational manner.
- Able to work a flexible schedule, including some nights (i.e. for council meetings, community meetings, etc.).
- Ability to interact professionally and build relationships and sources.
- Strong research and data gathering skills.
- Curious, reliable, driven, and motivated.
- Creative in driving content generation that attracts audience and readership.
- Able to learn from feedback and champion a growth mindset.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced and growing media environment.
Experience and Qualification:
- Two to three years of experience as a mainstream print journalist.
- Must have some formal university qualification in media and journalism.
Salary Package and Benefits
- Base salary $70,000 - $75,000 + superannuation.

The News was launched in May 2020.
We are focused on delivering topical and in-depth local news to the communities in our region. Our home is in Naracoorte, and we serve the district council areas of Naracoorte Lucindale, Tatiara, Wattle Range, Kingston, and Robe.
