An opportunity exists for a Laboratory Scientist (Chemistry, Microscopy) to join the Boeing Research & Technology Australia (BR&TA) team based in Port Melbourne on a full-time permanent basis. The successful applicant is required to perform this role onsite in a full-time capacity.
This fantastic development opportunity exists to work in the BAA Engineering, reporting to the Boeing Research and Technology Australia (BR&TA) Operations & Laboratory Manager in Melbourne.
Position Responsibilities:
Working under general supervision, within a laboratory team, you will be involved in coordinating & performing Material Acceptance testing in various technical fields involving both Chemical & Mechanical tests, conducting microscopy work and using technical knowledge on different types of test equipment, within the Laboratory.
Key accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Coordinating material acceptance tests
- Material Acceptance testing of Fabrics, Resins, Sealants, Paints & Adhesives
- Performing the following test types:
- HPLC
- Infrared
- Viscosity
- Thermomechanical (DSC, DMA, TMA)
- Fibre Volume Fraction – acid digestion
- Coupon Mechanical tests
- Chemistry work
- Microscopy work
- Writing, analyzing and verifying test results/reports
- Understand and work to material, process specifications, ASTMs
- Understand and apply company quality assurance standards / laboratory manual
- Maintain housekeeping / 5S
- Process Improvements activities
- Assist BAA / BR&TA to meet duty of care obligations for OH&S and environmental protection by participating in EHS related activities, and take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others at the workplace
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills / Experience):
- Knowledge & experience in the following:
- HPLC testing
- Infrared testing
- Viscosity testing
- Thermomechanical testing
- Microscopy - mounting, polishing, analysis of specimen
- Mechanical testing (desirable)
- Safe handling, storage, mixing & disposal of hazardous chemicals
- Successful completion of a Bachelor Degree in the relevant field is essential
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret Company specifications required
- Good knowledge of Safety Data Sheets & OHS procedures and exposure to quality systems
- Capable of working well with others, encouraging team building and networking with US colleague
- Effective communicator and listener
- Proven capability to work to agreed deadlines
- Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet Defense security requirements
Additional Information:
The successful candidate will be required to complete a 3-month probationary period.
