SESL Australia delivers high quality scientific outcomes to leading government and private sector clients. The Laboratory Supervisor will work closely with our Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Technicians and our Soil, Environmental and Resource Recovery Scientists.
About the role
We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Laboratory Supervisor to join our niche and well-established NATA accredited laboratory based in Sydney. Our team of laboratory technicians are specialists in soil, water, plant tissue and asbestos testing.
The Laboratory Supervisor will work closely with all laboratory teams from sample receipt to wet chemistry and analysis on various analytical instruments. The successful candidate will be required to coordinate the team in daily operational targets, provide hands on assistance where needed, drive continuous improvement objectives, and ensure all analytical work is done in accordance with documented procedures.

This role involves:
- Performing routine preparation, instrument setup and analysis in the Laboratory according to standard methods, to ensure all assigned testing is completed in an efficient, accurate and cost-effective manner;
- Overseeing the calibration records and schedules, and ensure all calibrations and validations are completed in accordance with NATA/Test Method requirements;
- Assisting with the internal audit program. This may include conducting internal audits when required;
- Assisting the Laboratory Manager with the day-to-day management of laboratory staff and establishment of training and development requirements and acting as an assessor for specific training;
- Completing Quality Control (QC) activities on all laboratory results, QC reporting and approving results for release;
- Maintaining an up-to-date understanding of advances in laboratory technology, standards, industrial practices, and Regulations as appropriate;
- Maintaining an in-depth knowledge of Laboratory Quality Documentation as they relate to NATA/ISO17025/ISO9001 requirements and assist the HSEQ Officer with document management; and
- Stock control for all laboratory consumables, including ordering laboratory supplies.
This role is offered on a full-time basis.
About you
We are looking for a candidate who meets the following criteria:
- Tertiary qualification in Chemistry or another applicable field;
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in commercial NATA accredited ISO 17025/ISO9001 chemistry laboratory, following standard methods and working to deadlines;
- Experience in method verification studies;
- In depth knowledge in accredited method requirements;
- Experience in coordinating operational tasks and managing workloads of large sample numbers;
- Adept people management/leadership skills;
- Ability to drive continuous improvement;
- Strong attention to detail mindset and ability to investigate root causes;
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to train laboratory staff;
- Have been an active participant of external audits by accrediting bodies; and
- Have a Quality and Safety mindset.
