About the Role
The Lead Engineer (Primary) role will provide specialist engineering and technical leadership for engineering to Ausnet’s Development and Future Networks divisions infrastructure teams.
In this role you will be responsible for supporting business development and client management activities with techno commercial inputs in the space of electrical substation primary design, construction, and asset management as well as ad hoc technical requests received from key stakeholders.
You will be pivotal to the ongoing change in the energy sector growth and provide guidance to the greater team in technical quality, technical compliance, performance, and value-for-money of all assets in the Contracted Asset Portfolio.
This role will report to the Team Lead, Infrastructure (Stations 1) and is located at Southbank, Victoria.

What you will deliver
- Provide specialist technical, commercial, asset management and design advice to support AusNet Services’ growth within the Stations Primary engineering discipline.
- Independently and autonomously manage the development of; tender and detailed designs, project scopes of work, equipment and construction specifications and other project activities including review of work produced by others.
- Auditing primary detailed design deliverables to the required quality, meeting all relevant standards and functional requirements
- Provide engineering leadership to resolve complex engineering issues during project delivery.
- Identify opportunities to introduce innovation and new technologies.
- Assess technical risks and ensure they are managed through design or commercial means.
- Lead in the development and maintenance of engineering standards, to ensure network compliance with legal, technical, regulatory and safety obligations.
- Evaluate options and make recommendations for complex technical problems requiring inventiveness to depart from or adapt accepted practices and procedures for which it is necessary to modify established guidelines and devise new approaches.
What we like about you
- Degree in Engineering or tertiary qualification with preferably significant experience in utilities with proficiency in design and asset management. This includes, but may not be limited to:
- Terminal Station & Substation primary layouts and diagrams
- Conductor and equipment rating selection and/or sizing
- System studies pertaining to Terminal Station & Substation design (Earthing studies, Lightning protection studies, Circuit breaker TRV/RRRV studies, Fault Forces calculations, etc.)
- Prior experience across Primary engineering design and construction with the business acumen and ability to meet engineering design excellence.
- Extensive knowledge of Primary electrical equipment in respect to design, performance, functionality, operation, and maintenance as used in Terminal Stations and Substations rated at up to 500kV in accordance with relevant Australian Standards (e.g. AS2067)
- Ability to use basic design or drawing software (e.g. AutoCAD) is desirable
- Proven capability in developing conceptual plans into feasible designs and producing high quality design deliverables such as drawings and scope of works including management of budgets and schedules.
- Considerable knowledge of other engineering disciplines and their impacts on Terminal Station & Substation design and equipment selection
- Demonstrated ability to liaise with project related teams such as project managers, construction contractors, communications, real time systems team and other Network Service Providers
- Ability to effectively work independently, solve problems and demonstrate proactivity.
