Legal Counsel
Position Summary
This position will support the Head of Legal Australia and Senior Counsel on a broad range of commercial legal and regulatory matters. More specifically the Legal Counsel will play a central role in supporting the Head of Legal on the administration of the Compliance and Company Secretarial functions as they relate to business operations and the various Australian corporate entities. The Legal Counsel will interact across all areas of our business.
Key Accountabilities
- Support the more senior members of the legal team to research and draft advice in respect of a broad range of legal issues e.g. general contract law (shipping line, road and rail), leases, IT service agreements, procurement agreements, compliance issues, construction/engineering projects, insurance claims and contractual disputes
- Support the Head of Legal to proactively identify, research, anticipate and guard company against legal and compliance risks
- Guide managers and ensure compliance with applicable policies, rules and regulations
- Willingness and ability to take on leadership roles within the legal team such as Privacy Officer and Fraud Risk Champion
- Partner with Head of Legal to deliver an effective, efficient and valued secretariat/governance service
- Co-ordination of the preparation and compilation of Board pack submissions for the Board meetings; management of board calendar
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor of Laws; Post Graduate Legal Qualification; admitted as a Legal Practitioner; current Practicing Certificate.
- 3 – 5+ years of post-qualification experience, ideally with experience working in a corporate secretariat and/or compliance role
- Experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating a variety of simple commercial agreements, including procurement agreements, services and consultancy agreements, MoU’s, NDA’s
- Experience dealing with regulatory and compliance matters
- Experience interpreting and applying legislation and regulatory policy
- Minimum of 2-4 years' experience in a Project Management capacity
- Business acumen, with the ability to balance commercial and legal considerations to deliver commercial solutions.
- Strong interest in relationship building, stakeholder engagement and developing strong decision making and influencing skills.
- Strong organisation skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage competing tasks.
