About the role
We have an opportunity for a junior-mid level lawyer with general commercial experience to join the Commercial Legal Team at Coles. You will ideally have 2 to 4 years PQE with experience in merchandise and procurement legal roles in the FMCG sector, either in-house or in private practice.
You will form part of a high performing legal team that focuses on strategic matters enabling Coles to appropriately balance risk and reward, and to adapt and respond proactively to new and changing environments.
What you'll be doing
- Provide legal support to the merchandise and procurement business units for all Coles Group businesses (supermarkets, liquor, online, wholesale and export) including by drafting and negotiating supplier and customer agreements, advising on contract and statutory interpretation issues, assisting with disputes
- Support on the drafting and negotiation of routine and complex commercial transactions and contracts, including on major projects as part of a project team
- Be one of the lead legal advisors in the merchandise legal team
- Have a strong understanding of Coles' regulatory and operational environments and provide associated advice including on the Food and Grocery Code, competition law, and privacy and data security laws
- Lead and support legal transformation initiatives
Good things you'll need
- Mid to top tier training in private practice or in a Top 100 ASX corporate law environment
- General commercial legal experience with an FMCG/merchandise focus
- Expertise in retail, procurement, IT transactions and contracts is preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills
- Ability to provide legally accurate and commercially focused advice
- Confidence in managing and influencing a variety of stakeholders
- Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment
- Ability to effectively balance commercial drivers with legal issues
- Motivation to identify and support new and improved processes
- Ability to mentor junior lawyers within the team
- Current practising certificate
