The Research Systems Engineer within the Data Science Platform will contribute to the implementation of Garvan’s research computing strategy. The aim of the strategy is to future-proof Garvan’s research storage and compute platforms to facilitate the analysis, storage and processing of large massive genomic datasets.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Research Systems Engineer will work closely with Garvan researchers to support and optimise their computational pipelines and data workflows on HPC and cloud systems. In addition to service monitoring and reporting, the Research Systems Engineer will manage the current on-premises infrastructure, help Garvan research teams migrate their HPC workflows and data to Australia’s National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) and commercial clouds and contribute to Garvan’s hybrid storage and compute roadmap.
This role will involve close collaboration with stakeholders from different research groups at Garvan and from our partner organisations, such as NCI, as well as cloud service providers.
Salary: up to $135,000 +11% super + salary packaging

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Engage research teams to understand their needs and provide expert advice on the use of HPC and cloud services for genomic research and data storage.
Design, implement, document and deploy service monitoring and reporting tools.
Maintain the existing on-premises HPC infrastructure.
Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and optimise genomic pipelines and data workflows using HPC and cloud resources.
Enable data- and compute-intensive workflows by leveraging services provided by cloud service providers and National Computational Infrastructure .
Develop training materials and user documentation.
Contribute to the development of onboarding and offboarding materials.
Contribute to training workshops, including content delivery as well as workshop support.
Contribute to the Data Science Platform Helpdesk.
Other duties as required.
ABOUT YOU
Experience in using HPC and/or cloud services for scientific research.
Experience in providing HPC and/or cloud computing support, such as batch job processing and parallel data transfers.
Experience in scientific software installation in HPC and cloud environments.
Experience in Linux system administration and scripting (e.g. Shell and Python).
Experience in authoring user documentation and training materials.
Excellent written and oral communication, representation and interpersonal skills essential for interaction with internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable
Experience in creating containers (e.g. Docker and/or Singularity) for reproducible workflows.
Experience in optimising HPC workflows.
Experience in VMware vSphere management.
