Local Disaster Coordinator

Salary Range: $109,835 - $135,686 per annum
Position Type: Full-Time Permanent 
Locations: Woree Disaster Coordination Centre / Cairns Regional Council Admin Building Spence Street

Cairns Regional Council is seeking a dedicated Local Disaster Coordinator to enhance our community's preparedness and response to disasters.

Primary Objectives:

  • Lead, develop and maintain prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery programs to build the disaster resilience of the Cairns LGA.
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with disaster management agencies and organisations at the Local, District and State level.
  • Maintain the Disaster Coordination Centre in an effective state of readiness.
  • Ensure the Council fulfills its compliance with disaster management obligations as detailed with the Queensland Disaster Management Act and associated regulations.

Our Ideal Candidate: 

  • Experience in a disaster management role, preferably within a government or emergency services environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and coordinating disaster management activities, including planning, preparedness, response, and recovery operations.
  • Ability to coordinate and activate a Disaster Coordination Centre, ensuring efficient and effective operations during emergencies.
  • Experience in building and maintaining strong working relationships with disaster management agencies and stakeholders at Local, District, and State levels.
  • Strong understanding of the Queensland Disaster Management Act and associated regulations.
  • Highly organised, attention to detail, proactive and adaptable.
  • Ability to respond effectively to dynamic and high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to participate in on-call roster during the wet season (Nov – April) and respond to emergencies outside of regular working hours.
