The Manager, First Nations Strategy, Policy and Programs works with the Director, Aboriginal Melbourne on the development and implementation of City of Melbourne strategies, policies and projects that support and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and cultures in Melbourne.

The Manager, First Nations Strategy, Policy and Programs will contribute to the strategic leadership of the Branch to ensure the highest ethical standards in the delivery of the City of Melbourne's objectives. This role will lead, enhance and bring consistent and strategic alignment to the efforts across the branch to proactively engage with community to gain views and feedback to help inform our strategic decision making and strengthen relationships.

A key objectives of this position provides strong, focused and quality leadership to support the team as a high performing customer focused organisation.

Aboriginal Melbourne works as a single team, with our people allocated to ensure that the people with the necessary skills are assigned to projects to increase the desired strategic outcomes. This means that team members can be moved between projects depending on the need of the project. The Head of Strategy, Policy and Programs will play a lead role in the oversight of the Branches projects including people and resources allocated to deliverables.

Key objectives of this position include:

  • The provision of strong, focused and quality leadership to support the branch as a high performing customer focused organisation
  • Promote a collaborative and high performing culture, supporting and driving efficiencies to deliver service excellence
  • Continue to develop and evolve on organisational wide communications, startegies and policy

What you will bring…

  • Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values - accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence.
  • Qualifications in a relevant degree and/or equivalent level experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and the ability to communicate effectively with Traditional Owner Groups and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Significant experience in implementing cultural protocols and providing cultural expertise within a large organisation
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in leading teams to develop and deliver strategies, policy, projects and Programs that strengthen Aboriginal communities
  • Proven ability to manage effectively through ambiguity to achieve strategic outcomes
  • Knowledge and experience in the development of policy, processes and structures that result in the integrated delivery of outcomes
  • Proven track records and the ability to initiate and implement strategic plans and Programs and to affect high-level stakeholder and organisational buy-in
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and maintain business plans, programs, policies and associated resources, communications, governance, budgetary and financial management requirements
  • Demonstrated experience in actively building a high performing team that is customer focused, collaborative, professional, engaged and based on trust
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal including the ability to prepare comprehensive reports and make recommendations
  • High level organisational skills and the ability to work in a semi-autonomous environment
