We have a diverse range of people and partnerships that span Australia and 25 countries, fostering a shared vision to create measurable economic, environmental, and social impact.As an Agricultural-Climate Scientist you'll be a part of the Resilience and Adaptation team of CSIRO Agriculture and Food's Sustainability Program and will collaborate with expertise in Climate Science Centre and other parts of CSIRO. You will contribute to science and create impact around agricultural-climatic information that supports resilience and strengthens the farming and agribusiness community.This is an exciting opportunity for researchers with expertise in both agricultural system and climate science with the ability to help in decision making at an enterprise scale and engage with both public and private sectors. If you have the knowledge, capability and expertise in agricultural systems science in agriculture and agribusiness with particular focus on climate viability and change, then apply now!Your duties will include:
  • Contribute to and lead, the development of climate adaptation knowledge, approaches and tools, working with the agriculture industry and commercial stakeholders to ensure effective outcomes and adoption.
  • Provide leadership in the translation of climate science to agricultural decision making and incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for existing and future research.
  • Explore and implement novel approaches to integrate climate data with agricultural simulation models, advanced data science approaches (such as machine learning and AI) and domain knowhow.
  • Follow and respond to trends in sustainable agriculture particularly in relation to climate change and adaptation.
  • Develop relationships with Australian agricultural and agribusiness stakeholders that generate understanding of climate challenges in order to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for client satisfaction.
Location: Canberra, ACT or Brisbane, QLD preferred, however other major cities may be consideredSalary: AU$110,038 - AU$119,080 plus up to 15.4% superannuationTenure: Specified term of up to 3 years / Full timeReference: 96106To be considered you will need:EssentialUnder CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
  • A doctorate or equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as agricultural science or climate science.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of climate adaptation, decision sciences, climate change and climate risk management as evidenced by ability to publish scientific publications journals and/or authorship of other technical papers, reports, grant applications or patents.
  • Training or demonstrated knowledge of agricultural systems science including understanding of the drivers, trends, opportunities and constraints on agriculture and agribusiness particularly in relation to climate variability and change.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how to engage diverse stakeholder types to generate understanding of climate challenges, and a capacity to use and translate climate information, climate forecasts or analyses into an agricultural context to inform agribusiness and industry decision making.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a member or leader of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and an understanding of the importance of inclusion and diversity in our projects and teams
Desirable
  • Experience in large multi-stakeholder projects.
  • Experience in developing digital solutions for agriculture.
  • Experience with agricultural simulation models, particularly data-model fusion approaches and the application of advanced data science such as machine learning and AI.
