About the Role


Reporting to the Head of Health, Safety, Security (HSS) for Operations Services (OS) you will be responsible for a small team across multiple locations providing leadership and direction in the delivery of HSS technical and strategic improvement initiatives. This role requires a high level of strategic thinking which translates into operational practices.

The role holds the responsibility for strategic program improvement and delivery of asset level work. You will support the design of OS-wide HSS processes and initiatives that will help to improve HSS maturity and make a difference to performance outcomes for OS.

In this role you will:

  • Develop and lead a strong capable team to deliver effective HSS services to your operational customers
  • Establish effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders 
  • Define and drive effectiveness and standardization of processes in partnership with your peers across HSS
  • Develop and implement OS HSS strategy in collaboration with Operational and Functional partners
  • Support the delivery of Minerals Australia and Global HSS Strategy and key HSS priorities;
  • Build HSS capability and capacity within teams through coaching, mentoring and the provision of advice of HSS strategy, system and procedures;
  • Participate in the governance of the HSS and Internal Audit and Assurance programs; 
  • Define and track adherence to, and efficiencies in, relevant HSS Budget; and,
  • Manage and support the execution of work that is the accountability of the HSS team


This dynamic role will support the OS asset which has a diverse and dynamic team across Australia supporting  the Coal, Copper, Iron Ore, and Nickle West assets as well as training and repair centres in Perth and Mackay. 

About You


You will be an experienced people leader with demonstrated experience leading a team in the mining or similar heavy / manufacturing industry. You have a passion for developing others through coaching, mentoring, rewarding and guiding. 

You will also have:

  • Strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills with a demonstrated capability to negotiate and influence internal and external stakeholders.  Well developed professional technical expertise in one or more HSS areas
  • Knowledge and ability to leverage the BHP operating system and change management to seek better ways.
  • Tertiary degree in a health, safety, security and emergency management or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Detailed knowledge of key concepts, theories and practices related to effective management of HSS related risks. 
  • Experience in or knowledge of the mining and construction legislative environment would also be an advantage
