What will you be doing?

As our Manager, Industry Engagement you will be primarily accountable for overseeing AUSMASA’s strategic Industry Engagement activities in order to progress training-related projects in support of industry needs. 

The role will manage and grow the team’s industry stakeholder ecosystem, ensuring key industry insights are captured and communicated to the broader AUSMASA team for inclusion in outputs such as the annual workforce plan, periodic snapshots, project proposals, policy positions and briefings.

Supervising a team of industry-specialist engagement principals, the Manager, Industry Engagement, provides strategic oversight and focuses engagement activities in line with planned areas of focus to identify skilling and training outcomes. Engagement activities will vary but can include in-person roundtables/workshops, online webinars/workshops, direct engagement, forums, and attendance at industry events, conferences, and expos.

Establishing external working relationships with similar functions with other Jobs and Skills Councils is an important element of this role. 

Key working relationships will be with the Manager, Workforce Planning and Policy and the Manager, Training Products to ensure that key workforce planning insights and outcomes are translated into skilling and training outputs. 

Supported by their industry-specialist principals (one for the mining industry and one for the automotive industry), the Manager, Industry Engagement will take the lead in managing AUSMASA’s two Strategic Workforce Advisory Panels (SWAP) – one for mining and one for automotive. This will see the maintenance of important stakeholder relationships and hosting highly engaging quarterly meetings for each SWAP, where new and emerging industry issues are discussed, new strategies proposed and approval sought for suggested AUSMASA projects.

The Manager, Industry Engagement, supported by the broader Workforce Strategy and Industry Engagement team, will lead the development of industry insights briefs and project proposals, which will be presented to SWAPs and, ultimately, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations through the Training Product and Implementation team for funding. 

The Manager, Industry Engagement will support the Executive Director, Workforce Strategy and Industry Engagement with internal and external reporting functions, strategic planning, resource and activity management and budget control.

As a manager of a small but highly skilled team, the Manager, Industry Engagement will be expected to lead, guide and mentor their staff in order to achieve against the full work plan set out for the Workforce Strategy and Industry Engagement team.

It is expected that the Manager, Industry Engagement will possess very strong communication skills, both verbal and written, commensurate with the role’s interaction with peak bodies, government departments, industry stakeholders, unions and other internal teams.

More specifically, you’ll take responsibility for:

  • Management of the Industry Engagement team, providing guidance, support and strategic oversight
  • Management of key stakeholder relationships, especially those aligned to the team’s two SWAPs. As well as with other Jobs and Skills Councils
  • Planning, overseeing and supporting targeted engagement activities that progress identified areas of focus, with insights appropriately captured and communicated to relevant teams within AUSMASA
  • Overseeing the production of high-quality and evidence-based insight briefs and project proposals
  • Overseeing and champion the appropriate use of AUSMASA’s Stakeholder Management System
  • Management of the team’s budget and work plan / activities to achieve strategic results
  • Any other activity that supports the Workforce Strategy and Industry Engagement team or as directed by the Executive Director, Workforce Strategy and Industry Engagement

Must haves:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (Commerce, Economics, Public Policy etc)
  • At least 5 years experience in a similar role
  • Working knowledge and experience in the resources and/or automotive industries
  • Managerial and leadership experience in an organisation with national reach
  • Exemplary stakeholder management and engagement skills
  • High skills in the Microsoft suite of products
  • A self-starter who takes initiative and can work autonomously
  • Values diversity and actively contributes to a respectful and fun workplace

Bonus points:

  • Post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (Commerce, Economics, Public Policy etc)
  • Significant experience in Australia’s Vocational Education and Training sector
  • Working knowledge of the legislative environment in which the minerals and/or automotive industries operate.
