Job description

The QUT Student Guild is a not-for-profit with a proud history of advocating for students and enriching their university experience for over 50 years. Serving as the voice of a student body of over 50,000 members, we offer a wide range of essential support services to ensure students are part of a vibrant community where their rights are respected. At the heart of our mission, the Guild strives to ensure that all students feel supported and have unforgettable experiences during their studies.

The Managing Director is the senior leader responsible for the organisations overall service delivery and operational performance, with a key focus on strategic development, stakeholder relations, and oversight. The role involves directing a team of Guild Professional Staff (GPS) that collaborate with the Student Representative Council (SRC) on student affairs to achieve the goals and objectives of the student body. The individual will ensure the Guild follows a Board endorsed strategy that meets the expectations of its members and stakeholders while fostering an inclusive, engaging, and supportive workplace environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop strategic plans in consultation with students that align with the organisation's mission and vision.

• Refine strategic objectives and goals in an outcomes-based manner by ensuring they are smart, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.

• Lead the organisation towards achieving its short-term objectives and long-term goals.

• Act as a key liaison between the GPS, SRC and the Board.

• Cultivate a positive and productive environment that fosters trust and respect between permanent staff and democratically elected student representatives.

• Lead, motivate, and develop the GPS to ensure a high-performing and flexible team capable of achieving the Guild objectives and goals.

• Mentor, support, and empower the SRC so that their voices are heard on student affairs to allow meaningful change for their constituents.

• Inform, guide, and enable the Board to fulfil their governance responsibilities and directorship duties.

• Oversee the organisation's day-to-day operations and service delivery, including efficient management of staff and resources.

• Oversee governance and reporting practices, including adherence to governing frameworks, work plans, and internal policies.

• Oversee compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in all aspects and levels of the organisation.

• Oversee implementation of strategic plans, including adjustments to strategy based on feedback and environmental changes so it remains responsive and accountable to student needs.

• Oversee responsible financial management of the organisation, including regular reporting of budget forecasts against actual revenue and expenditure.

• Build and maintain strong relationships with various stakeholders to benefit members, including students, university administration, and external partners.

 • Advocate students' desires for policies and initiatives that enhance the student experience to the university and the broader community.

Qualifications

• Master in Business Administration (MBA) or equivalent experience in a senior management position.

• Graduate Member of the AICD Company Director Course (GAICD) or equivalent experience in a directorship position.

• Exceptional interpersonal skills to communicate and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders.

• Strong understanding of governance, compliance, and risk management principles and frameworks.

• Proficiency in financial management, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting.

• Ability to foster a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative organisational culture.

• Inspirational leadership style that encourages participation, innovation, and dedication.

• High level of integrity, ethical decision-making, and transparency practices.

 • Passionate advocate for student rights.

• Resilient and adaptable in the face of challenges and change

Role Details
