The opportunity

CSIRO Space and Astronomy operate a number of world-class radio astronomy observatories that are collectively known as the Australia Telescope National Facility or the ATNF. We are one of the world’s leading astronomical facilities and Australia’s premier radio astronomy research organisation.

As the Mechanical Engineer, you will be a member of the Antenna and Receiver Technologies group within CSIRO’s Space and Astronomy business unit.  

This role involves Finite Element Analysis (FEA); thermal modelling; mechanical design and the production of engineering reports and engineering drawings for instrumentation for use in radio astronomy and space science.  In this role, you will also be involved in providing Mechanical Engineering support to the telescope sites, including receiver installation and maintenance.

Your duties will include:

  • Undertaking mechanical design tasks including Finite Element Analysis (FEA), thermal modelling associated with the development of antennas, receiver and feed systems, radio frequency and digital systems for use in radio astronomy and/or space science applications under the guidance of a senior engineer.
  • With training producing engineering/project reports and engineering drawings to AS1100 (or equivalent) suitable for distribution to clients, suppliers and contractors.
  • Supporting the fabrication of prototype and/or proof-of-concept components or assemblies using in-house facilities.
  • Working as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team comprising scientists, engineers and technicians.
  • Travelling to CASS observatories and other sites to assist in the maintenance, development, verification and commissioning of instrumentation.
  • Working collaboratively and honestly with internal and external colleagues, clients and partners to develop and progress a range of research projects.
  • Designing and executing small research experiments in the field of cryogenics and assist with elements of larger test programs.
  • Overseeing the activities of less experienced staff and provide guidance on experimental/ technological techniques and protocols as required.
  • Responding courteously and efficiently to client requests, maintaining clear communication regarding mutual expectations and monitoring client satisfaction. 
  • Other duties as required.

Location: Marsfield (Sydney), NSW

Salary: AU$93k - AU$105k per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years, full-time or part-time (minimum 0.8FTE)

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or other relevant Engineering field.
  • Experience in the use of industry standard 3D mechanical CAD packages such as AutoCAD Inventor.
  • Experience in the use of industry standard mechanical Finite Element Analysis tools such as NASTRAN or ANSYS.
  • Demonstrated ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
  • The ability to effectively manage a number of competing priorities simultaneously and carry out non-routine tasks under supervision.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and carry out tasks with guidance in support of organisational and project goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality engineering reports and engineering drawings to AS1100 (or equivalent) suitable for manufacture by suppliers and/or contractors.
  • Demonstrated skills at a hands-on level in a trouble shooting environment.
  • An understanding of the principles behind design of cryogenic and/or refrigeration systems and the materials used in these applications.
     

Eligibility

Please note, as part of this role, the successful applicant will be required to occasionally spend periods of up to two weeks at time working at locations away from Sydney; access and work at heights up to 100M above the ground and work in confined spaces.
