About the role:
Our Mechanical Officers are responsible for coordinating and undertaking technical and mechanical care and maintenance of NSW RFS vehicles and equipment, so that we can ensure we are always ready to provide support to our community when needed.
You will be a fully qualified Mechanic and have extensive experience and knowledge across all areas of heavy motor vehicle repair, and a comprehensive understanding of relevant legislation and compliance.
No two days are the same in this role, which is how we like it at NSW Rural Fire Service. Between keeping our fleet in tip-top shape, you will also track, monitor, and report on works carried out using our corporate asset maintenance system and make recommendations using your knowledge and expertise. Our community is spread across a large geographical area, so it will also be your responsibility to conduct and arrange repairs and maintenance at remote locations while mentoring and educating the broader team.
Please note, there may be times when you are called outside of normal business hours.
As our ideal candidate, you will:
- Have extensive experience in heavy vehicle fleet repairs
- Have a keen interest in professional and technical development
- Be proactive and experienced in preventative maintenance
- Have a demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation and policies related to Heavy Vehicles
- Be able to demonstrate experience in maintaining records related to works carried out
- Have an understanding and appreciation of volunteer culture
You may be required to participate in an after-hours Operational Duty Roster dependant of level of firefighting qualification and experience.
Essential Requirements
- Current Tradesperson Certificate for repair work on Heavy Commercial Vehicles (issued by NSW Department of Fair Trading).
- A current Medium Rigid driver’s licence and willingness to obtain Heavy Rigid driver’s licence if required.
- Willingness and ability to undertake relevant Bush firefighting operational training.
- Good general health and fitness confirmed by a medical examination.
- Knowledge and understanding of duties and obligations under the Work, Health and Safety Act and associated legislation.
- During periods of major fire activity, the incumbent may be required to support operational management activities consistent with their skills and background.
- Knowledge and understanding of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulations.
