Mental Health Intensive Care Response (MHICAR) Nurse (RPN4)

  • Ongoing full-time role (including monthly ADOs)
  • Based at Footscray, Western Hospital
Your new team
  
Orygen Specialist Program (OSP) provides specialist Mental Health services, focusing on early intervention, for young people aged 15 to 25 with severe and complex mental illness.
  
Our Inpatient Unit (IPU) is located in Footscray on the Western Hospital site. The IPU includes a 16-bed low dependency area and a further three beds (ICA-EAST) for targeted specialised service delivery for youth with complex Mental Health and psychosocial needs.

Your new role

A dynamic opportunity for a senior nurse to develop and manage the MHICAR model across the IPU. In this role, you will also:

  • Provide leadership, training and support to IPU team
  • Work closely with CNC to evaluate and innovate: Safewards, reducing restrictive interventions, implementing MHIC and reducing need to call code grey
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team and model safe, timely, person-centred and trauma-informed care for young people experiencing distress and vulnerability during an admission
  • Proactively engage with young people in acute phases of their illness by providing sensory-based calming approaches, trauma-informed de-escalation strategies, understanding of potential triggers, and preferred calming techniques
  • Provide inclusive and sensitive practice to young people and their families/carers from Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander, CALD and LGBTQIA backgrounds 
About You:
  • Comprehensive clinical expertise to initiate and lead evidence-based nursing practice in the care delivery to young people with complex Mental Health needs 
  • Experience in the areas of Solution Focussed Therapy, Sensory Modulation, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or subject areas relevant to inpatient setting is desirable 
  • Leadership experience including provision of consultation, supervision, and education to nurses and overall team
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are highly encouraged to apply
