Key Responsibilities
- To work as part of a team including legal practitioners, field officers and support staff to provide a high-quality support service.
- Identify, collect information, and observe clients and their situations in a manner which is respectful and culturally appropriate to assess and determine strategies that provide a suitable and just outcome.
- Provide support and assistance to clients to manage their emotions through de-escalation strategy.
- Build a relationship with patients and families to build trust.
- Support clients to connect with community-based services which can address their needs, and which can support them to make sustainable changes that provide a safe environment for them.
- Interact and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, particularly with Aboriginal communities.
- Provide casework social work assistance to criminal clients who have a mental impairment defense or are unfit to plead.
- Provide casework social work assistance to Civil and Family Law clients who have a Mental Health issue.
- Liaise with other Aboriginal organisations, communities and individuals.
- Other duties as required and/or requested by the CEO or respective manager.
- Actively participate and contribute to responsible and safe work practices by ensuring all WHS legislation, policies and procedures are adhered to within the workplace this includes any directive given by the Human Services department in relations to any pandemics.
- Embracing diversity and cultural differences in the workplace by modelling respectful behaviour in the workplace.
Essential Criteria
- Degree or equivalent qualification which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
- Knowledge of and experience of working with clients who are litigants in the Civil and Criminal Law jurisdictions.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Must understand de-escalation in order to properly handle crisis or emergency situations.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to show empathy with clients.
- Ability to listen to clients without being judgmental.
Desirable Criteria
- Demonstrated knowledge of Family Law and Child Protection systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Criminal Law and Part 8A Criminal Law Consolidation Act
- Demonstrated knowledge in the formulation and execution of an effective Mental Health care plan.

- A sound understanding of the objectives of Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement, its services and clients.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the diversity of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Organisation’s Core Values (Code of Ethics) and the Employee Conduct Policy.
