Cardiac Sonographer, The Canberra Hospital – Permanent

Talent Quarter are delighted to be supporting our valued client in their search for a qualified Cardiac Sonographer to join their Allied Health Team in supporting Canberra Hospital’s Department of Cardiology.

About your role

Canberra Hospital is the largest tertiary teaching hospital in the region providing trauma, medical and surgical services. You will work in a growing health care service that includes a new Critical Services Building providing state of the art technology and facilities.

The Department of Cardiology is a well-established service with 14 consultant medical staff positions, four Accredited Cardiology Advanced Trainees, and two Unaccredited Cardiology Advanced Trainees, in addition to Basic Physician Trainees and other Junior Medial Officers. They work as part of a large multidisciplinary team including specialist nursing staff, cardiac physiologists, cardiac sonographers, administrative staff and the cardiac rehabilitation team. Patients accessing the services include adults of all ages, acuity, frailty and disability, who present for diagnosis and treatment of a range of acute and chronic cardiac conditions.

We have a strong education program, including weekly on-site echo education and regular multi-disciplinary education meetings.

Our Sonographers undertake and support advanced imaging including;

  • Periodic adult congenital heart disease clinics
  • Supporting Cardiologists with transoesophageal echocardiograms
  • Sonographer led transthoracic imaging in the cardiac catheter laboratories, in support of a structural heart program

This position requires subject matter expertise and the ability to work autonomously to conduct routine and complex echocardiography studies in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The role includes supporting the management of the service, the provision of education and training for staff and students and requires participation in and contribution to continual professional development of the cardiac sonographer and physiologist.

About you

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate consistent display of high-quality organisation and communication skills, and are able to operate effectively both independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. You will possess:

  • A Bachelor of Science Applied science, Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (Cardiac) and Accreditation with the Australasian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR), as well as being registered under the Working for Vulnerable People Act.
  • Proven ability to perform echocardiographic procedures independently, applying sound knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology for interpretation of the results and aligning the findings with the ASE guidelines to complete a comprehensive interim report.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide education, training and mentoring in the field of echocardiography.
  • Proven ability to maintain high standards of quality, accuracy and safety for all echocardiography investigations and to initiate and contribute to quality assurance and quality improvement projects.
  • Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
