Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated Outbye Superintendent to lead, direct and manage Outbye activities to allow the longwall and development production processes to proceed uninterrupted and ensure all activities are undertaken in a safe, cost effective and efficient manner in line with agreed operational standards and targets.
Reporting to the Operations Manager, your typical duties include, but not limited to the following:
- Accountable for the underground mine infrastructure (services, conveyors, secondary support, and excavations) you will demonstrate leadership in accordance with the Qld Coal Mining Safety & Health Act, Regulations, other legal and corporate requirements.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring interactions between work groups are controlled in a safe positive manner.
- Actively participate in the development of the LOM plan, working closely with the commercial department to ensure costs are managed with the budget guidelines.
- Provide strong leadership to drive a high-performance culture, role modelling and reinforcing Anglo American values that underpin the success of Aquila mine.
- Monitor plant, equipment, and process performance, identifying and fostering a continual improvement culture.
- Identify obstacles and implement strategies early to address them to achieve budget. Escalate identified issues that impact then safe and effective operations of the mine to Operations Manager in a timely manner.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role you will have the following:
- Previous experience in a similar position within an underground mining operation
- A detailed understanding of the coal mining processes and knowledge of relevant mining legislation and its application
- Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to influence and achieve buy in from key stakeholders
- A high level of strategic thinking, planning and problem-solving ability
- Demonstrated commitment to safety with previous experience in identifying risks and implementing safe working practices
