ABOUT THE ROLE

The AFL has a rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in football across the Northern Territory. AFLNT has the highest rates of Indigenous participation in AFL competitions and programs of all States and Territories nationally. Most importantly AFL contributes to supporting the social fabric of Indigenous communities in the NT and drives positive social outcomes.

Based in Darwin, Northern Territory, AFLNT is seeking an Indigenous Programs Lead – NT to strengthen and expand the relationships between AFLNT, the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre (MLLLC) and Aboriginal Communities throughout the Northern Territory. This role will provide specialist knowledge, strategic guidance and advice to AFLNT on challenges and opportunities for Indigenous communities to engage in AFLNT programs, competitions, and activities to promote positive participation in AFL football.

This newly created role will build and enhance the outcomes and impacts AFL has in partnership with Aboriginal communities of the Northern Territory, working closely with both internal and external stakeholders. The position will also connect Aboriginal communities with AFL matches played throughout the Northern territory, particularly Sir Douglas Nichols Round. 

The AFL considers that identifying as an Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position and constitutes a special measure under s 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT).

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide strategic support and guidance to AFLNT on engaging with Aboriginal Communities, Aboriginal Corporations and Government agencies in AFL programs and activities across the NT.
  • Expand strategic relationships with Aboriginal communities throughout the NT including remote communities, Aboriginal Town Camps, and regional towns.
  • Ensure AFLNT is facilitating and maintaining culturally safe spaces for AFL competitions, programs, and school-based activities.
  • Collaborate closely with AFLNT departments and provide specialist advice to drive and enhance participation outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander footballers.
  • Provide strategic direction to AFLNT regarding Indigenous programs and competitions.
  • Present to key stakeholders, funding providers and program partners on AFL opportunities and outcomes in partnership with Aboriginal communities.
  • Support AFLNT’s Community Football department to facilitate ‘Indigenous Rounds’ throughout community AFL competitions.
  • Work closely with the AFL and AFL clubs to establish connections with Aboriginal communities during scheduled AFL matches in the Northern Territory.
  • Enhance the cultural awareness of AFLNT staff and community AFL clubs.
  • Support the cultural competency of AFLNT staff, community AFL club volunteers and coaches and teachers engaged in AFL activities within Aboriginal communities.

  • Experience working and collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities to achieve strategic outcomes.
  • Understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal communities throughout the NT and the place of AFL in these communities.
  • Previous experience in ensuring, facilitating and upholding culturally safe spaces and environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Demonstrated history of engaging a wide range of stakeholders from varied backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Experience leading and engaging a team that work in remote locations.  
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to effectively engage with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Understanding of positive health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal Communities and able to link and align AFLNT programs to supporting positive outcomes.
  • Ability to coordinate the engagement and participation of Aboriginal communities in significant AFL events throughout the Northern Territory.
