The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) provides secondary and tertiary care to children and young people across the northern and western suburbs; specialist paediatric healthcare to the children of Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and parts of South Australia; and is the designated state-wide provider of services including paediatric trauma, rehabilitation and forensic medicine. As a quaternary centre for complex cardiac surgery and organ transplantation, the RCH cares for the sickest children from around Australia.

The Role

The Medical Imaging Department (MID) delivers comprehensive clinical services to all hospital departments. The role of the RCH Paediatric Radiology Fellow is to further their learning in all areas in paediatric diagnostic radiology. The position presents an invaluable opportunity to cultivate the necessary skills for a future consultant role in both inpatient and outpatient care settings, under the guidance and support of Paediatric Radiology Consultants. Fellows collaborate closely with clinical teams through their clinical reporting and involvement in the multiple multidisciplinary team meetings. Fellows are actively involved in educational activities both within the Department and throughout the greater hospital. This Paediatric Radiology Fellowship opportunity is well-suited for individuals who have successfully completed the FRANZCR examination or an equivalent qualification and who wish to equip themselves with greater Paediatric Radiology experience and/or aspire to build a career in Paediatric Radiology.

The Fellowship position is for applicants seeking full time employment with options of 6 month and 12 month contracts available.

Essential Qualifications include:

  • Medical Degree, and all domestic applicants should be currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Demonstrated interest in General Diagnostic Paediatric Radiology.
  • All International applicants must be able to satisfy AHPRA registration requirements.
  • All international applicants will be required to provide evidence of English language competence (IELTS or similar) prior to or at the time of interview.

Key Accountabilities include: 

Clinical workload

  • Supervised reporting through rostered rotation through all the diagnostic radiology modalities
  • Work in a 24/7 shift-based clinical roster to ensure that there is continuous provision of paediatric radiological care at the RCH
  • Exposure to performing in the Duty Radiologist role directly liaising with the clinical teams on imaging request

Communication and Teamwork

  • Work as part of and contribute to a multidisciplinary team.
  • Deal with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise discretion, sensitivity and maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrate leadership within a team environment and actively contribute to team activities, including proactively participating in team meetings and decision-making processes
  • Demonstrate ability to initiate and undertake decisions with patients and their families regarding their hospitalisation and progress
  • Communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with Consultants regarding the patients under their care

Education and Training

  • Participate in on-going professional development activities both within the MID and within the broader hospital.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and post graduate teaching of rotating Radiology registrars and students.
  • Demonstrate an interest in teaching, understanding and application of research principles.
  • Oversee junior trainees and medical students
  • Participate in ongoing review of their clinical practice as per conditional registration guidelines.
  • Participate in continuing medical education and professional development as covered by the supervision arrangement stipulated by the Medical Board and maintenance of professional competence.
  • Meet RANZCR training program requirements; participate in educational experiences; actively seek to learn and obtain feedback to develop and understand own skills, knowledge, and capability; exercise judgement; and know when to seek assistance.

Clinical Leadership and Risk Management

  • Support the evaluation of RCH services in relation to present and future needs and make recommendations to the Head of Department (Director). 
  • Develop and participate in MID and RCH quality activities.
  • Adopt safe work practices as recommended by the management and raise any WH&S issues of concern with the relevant authorities

Please note for IMGs, the MID department will sponsor any successful IMG applicants on a 407 training Visa.
