Established in 1962, Belmore School is a specialist school catering for students who have a physical disability and/or significant health impairment requiring paramedical support. Students have a wide range of intellectual abilities, and some have multiple disabilities and complex needs. All students are funded under the Program for Students with Disabilities. Located in Stroud Street Balwyn with a frontage on Belmore Road, Belmore School caters for students aged 5 to 18 years from a wide geographical area and a diverse socio-economic background from the north east quadrant of metropolitan Melbourne.
Belmore School has a highly qualified and extremely experienced teaching team passionate about providing an optimum learning environment for our students. Supported by small class sizes and an extensive education support team, teachers are able to provide innovation and best practice in teaching and learning to enable each student to achieve their full potential. This comprehensive educational team is supplemented by highly skilled Pathology staff including physiotherapist, speech therapists, occupational therapist and music therapist. Our staff are committed to delivering high quality learning programs through a multidisciplinary approach. Additional support programs are provided by our school nurse, psychotherapist, and social worker. An attendant care team supports the personal care requirements of students in a sensitive manner in private, well- resourced facilities.

SC1. Demonstrated knowledge, ability and experience in coordinating the provision of Speech Pathology Services, in the area of Special Education
SC2.Expert knowledge and experience of a range of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems, encompassing both low-technology and high-technology systems.
SC3. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in collaboration with teaching teams to devise programs that establish and extend a student’s functional communication and social skills in a range of contexts
SC4. Demonstrated experience in providing mentoring and supervision to junior Speech Pathologists
SC5. Demonstrated ability to liaise and work with other therapists and specialist staff both internal and external to the school community
SC6. Highly developed organisational skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently, utilise effective time management strategies, establish priorities and meet deadlines
The Speech Pathologist will be responsible for the provision of communication and language pathology services in a specialist school setting for students aged 5 to 18 years with complex physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities and/or health impairments. The successful incumbent will work alongside teachers and therapists in a multi-disciplinary context using contemporary evidence-based therapeutic and educational frameworks. The successful applicant will undertake a range of duties including but not limited to; assessment, identification and establishment of communication systems for non-verbal students, assessment and development of mealtime supports and a range of assessments for reporting purposes and secondary consultations. This position will suit a practitioner with an interest in Alternative Augmentative Communication and feeding management.
- To provide communication and language services for Belmore students aged 5 to 18 years.
- To assess and review regularly students’ mealtime requirements, including eating, drinking and swallowing abilities.
- To assess communication abilities and make recommendations on appropriate communication systems.
- To develop Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems.
- To support students’ communication and participation in classroom programs.
- To design, implement and evaluate appropriate language and communication programs.
- To provide consultation to support capacity building for teachers, therapists and education support staff regarding integration of language and communication programs within the curriculum and classroom programs.
- To provide support and training to all staff regarding students communication systems.
- To provide support for equipment management within the school.
- To provide assessment reports and other supporting documents for funding applications.
- To provide school based professional learning, training and workshops as required.
- To be proactive and take responsibility for own clinical supervision, professional learning and growth.
- To undertake other duties as directed by the Principal and Allied Health leader.
