Painting Trades Worker

Tasksand responsibilities include:

• Apply paints, stains,varnishes, enamels, and other finishes onto equipment, buildings, bridges, orstructures using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
• Apply primers or sealers toprepare new surfaces such as bare wood or metal for finish coats.
• Calculate amounts ofrequired materials and estimate costs, based on surface measurements and/orwork orders.
• Cover surfaces with dropcloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
• Fill cracks, holes, andjoints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers using caulking guns orputty knives.
• Mix and match colours ofpaint, stain, or varnish with oil and thinning and drying additives in order toobtain desired colours and consistencies.
• Polish final coats tospecified finishes.
• Read work orders or receiveinstructions from supervisors or homeowners in order to determine workrequirements.
• Remove fixtures such aspictures, door knobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.
• Remove old finishes bystripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning or using water and/or abrasiveblasting.
• Smooth surfaces, usingsandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, and/or sanding machines.
• Wash and treat surfaces withoil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations and sand rough spots toensure that finishes will adhere properly.
• Bake finishes on painted andenameled articles using baking ovens.
• Cut stencils and brush andspray lettering and decorations on surfaces.
• Erect scaffolding and swinggates or set up ladders to work above ground level.
• Select and purchase toolsand finishes for surfaces to be covered, considering durability, ease of handling,methods of application, and customers’ wishes.
• Spray or brush hot plasticsor pitch them onto surfaces.
• Use special finishingtechniques such as sponging, ragging, layering, or faux finishing.
• Waterproof buildings usingwaterproofers and caulking.
• Maintain correct records andgeneral recordkeeping.
• Follow establishedprotection procedures.
• Clean up the job site afterwork and return equipment and tools.
• Maintain a clean workenvironment.    

Tools and technology:

Variety of differenttools are used to remove and apply paint, wallpaper and other finishes. Theseinclude steam wallpaper strippers, scrapers, ladders, sanders, and liquid paintremovers for eliminating previous finishes. To protect surfaces, drop sheetsand adhesive tape are used, while the application process involves paintbrushes, sponges, spray guns, rollers, and stencils.

Knowledge of: 

Residential andcommercial/industrial practices and processes in the painting trade. Theseinclude paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, paint removers, andrelated materials, and their properties and application; applicable coderequirements; methods and practices for maintaining tools, machinery, andequipment; occupational hazards of the painting trade and precautionarymeasures to observe.

Qualifications/experience:

• Preferably a minimum of three years’ work experiencein a similar setting.
• Must possess at least a Certificate III inPainting and Decorating.
• Ability to communicate well in spoken andwritten English.

Special requirements:

• Must be able to perform physical activities,such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted),bending, standing, climbing or walking.
• Must be able to safely use manual tools andpower equipment common in the construction trades.
• Must be able to handle hazardous materialssafely and tolerate exposure to electrical hazards.

Salary:

$71,000 plussuperannuation
