Aside from litigation and property-related services, baron + associates also provides dispute resolution services, commercial legal advice, and handles complex conveyancing services on large property development projects. The firm also has extensive experience working with clients on private matters, such as estate/succession planning.
Role Description
baron + associates is looking for a full-time paralegal/secretary to join our on-site team in Sydney's CBD.
The role requires a strong attention to detail and the ability to work autonomously while managing a diverse portfolio of files under the supervision of the firm's Principal and Senior Associate.
You will be required to assist both the Principal and Senior Associate of the firm on a daily basis.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Providing comprehensive support to the Senior Associate throughout all phases of litigation (legal and administrative);
- Assisting in drafting legal documents;
- Corresponding (verbally and in writing) with clients, barristers, opposing solicitors, witnesses, experts and court/tribunal personnel;
- Assisting in taking/reviewing instructions from clients;
- Preparing cost agreements, monitoring total billings and updating cost agreements (if required);
- Conducting legal research and gathering information in support of case strategy;
- Attending to document review and discovery;
- Preparing briefs to barristers;
- Preparing annexures to affidavits, exhibits, court books and bundles in proceedings;
- Arranging and scheduling appointments (both virtual and in-person), court tasks, mediations and hearings, including management of the litigation diary;
- Attending to filing and service of court documents, including electronically and in person (when required)
- Managing litigation billing, including generating invoices for review, issuing approved invoices to clients and chasing debtors (if required).
- Attending to the classification, organisation and management of documents, including correspondence, pleadings, evidence and discovery material;
- Performing administrative tasks, including answering telephone, issuing letters, arranging couriers and carrying out other ad-hoc administrative duties (as required)
Skills and Experience
- Experience as a litigation paralegal;
- Knowledge of litigation procedures and terminology, including across various jurisdictions, such as the District Court of NSW, Supreme Court of NSW, Federal Court of Australia, Land and Environment Court of NSW and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal;
- Proficiency in legal research;
- Experience with document management software (in particular Practice Evolve or similar);
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
- Excellent organisational skills, including experience with email and diary management;
- Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritise work to ensure deadlines are met in a fast-paced work environment;
- High level of attention to detail;
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team whilst also autonomously at times;
- Strong work ethic and interpersonal skills, with a fun and engaging personality.
- Tech savvy, open and adaptive to new systems;
