About the Role
The Curation Officer at the University of Melbourne Herbarium plays a vital role in overseeing the Volunteer Program and training students in advanced specimen curation and data management techniques. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with the Curator in managing and curating a diverse collection of Herbarium objects and digital specimens.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Manage the University of Melbourne Herbarium Volunteer Program and supervise the work of the volunteers in the collection.
  • Prepare collection objects and database resources for curation by the volunteer team and conduct quality assessment of the curated objects prior to their accession into the collection.
  • Track and report on the volunteer team requirements, initiatives, and outputs.
  • Assist the Curator with project-based curation initiatives for maintenance and development of Herbarium resources and infrastructure.
  • Maintain, improve, and apply agreed practices in the management of specimens and collection information and support digital asset and metadata management for online presentation and searchability.

Who We Are Looking For
You will have a passion for mobilising Herbarium resources using traditional and cutting-edge protocols , along with strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines.

You will also have:

  • A relevant qualification with subsequent relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Experience with herbarium specimen curation protocols including specimen conservation, nomenclature checks, and data management.
  • Experience leading or supporting a team to achieve project outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Collection Management Systems (e.g., Specify, EMu), Digital Asset Management, Digital Rights Management, and online platforms.
  • Familiarity with online- and print-based biodiversity resources (e.g., floras and data repositories).

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.

The University of Melbourne Herbarium (MELU) is the largest university herbarium in Australia, with an estimated 170,000 specimens. The collection contains specimens of flowering plants, ferns, bryophytes, algae, and fungi, as well as historic botanical objects and artwork. The collection was established by a gift of 3000 specimens in 1926 and new specimens, many collected by University of Melbourne staff and students, are being continually added. The Herbarium is an invaluable resource for biodiversity teaching at the University of Melbourne and provides access to collection-based specimens and data that underpin research on taxonomy, systematics, ecology and conservation.
