About the Role

YWCA Canberra’s Pathways Housing and Support Program (Pathways Program), to commence on 1 May 2024 will be delivered in partnership with Companion House. Pathways is a specialist homelessness service focused on identifying and addressing the needs and gaps of men and women, including any accompanying children, with uncertain immigration status in the ACT, including women escaping domestic or family violence under the domestic violence provisions of the migration legislation (Migration Regulations 1994), and people with no/limited income with no work rights as priority cohorts for this service.

Addressing homelessness, trauma, and torture among individuals and families with uncertain immigration status requires a comprehensive, evidence-informed service model that is both culturally sensitive, human rights and gender-responsive. Working collaboratively with Companion House, the Coordinator will work closely with other YWCA Canberra and Companion House staff and other specialist services staff to establish and operate the Pathways Program.

About You
The ideal candidate will have:
  • A Diploma in Community Services, or tertiary qualifications in a relevant field such as social work, psychology or human services. Qualifications in children and family development, (or similar) is desirable.
  • Experience working effectively with vulnerable and disadvantaged people
  • Understanding of the needs of people seeking asylum or who have visa uncertainty
  • Experience working with people experiencing or at risk of homelessness within a supported accommodation/outreach framework preferred
  • Experience and/or the ability to work competently with families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • A knowledge and understanding of the impact of family violence and trauma on the cycle of homelessness
  • Sound working knowledge of the issues affecting homeless families including children and young people and the application of strategies to address issues affecting individual family members when accessing appropriate housing including the additional challenges of people with little to no income and uncertainty arising from visa status.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following fields:
    • Individual and family case management
    • Advocacy
    • Outreach support
  • Collaborative professional practice
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including written skills
  • Strong commitment to teamwork and an ability to work in a team environment with a commitment to professional supervision
  • Ability to effectively communicate with people from non-English speaking backgrounds, using translation services where required as well as those who have experienced trauma and torture.

The successful applicant will hold, or be able to obtain, Working with Vulnerable People registration, current National Criminal Record Check and a current driver’s license.
