Right across Victoria, from the heart of Melbourne to the most remote country towns, Police Officers carry out a range of duties that are diverse, rewarding and challenging to help keep the community safe.

And if you discover a particular interest, there are pathways open to you to train for a specialist field or promotion.

At every step of the way - from your very first day at the Victoria Police Academy - we will provide you with the training required, support you in developing skills, and help you pursue your goals.

Duties:

The roles and duties of general duties Police Officers means no two days are ever the same. General duties officers are the 'first responders' and can undertake a variety of duties on shift including: 

  • Investigate crime
  • Prevent anti-social behaviour
  • Deal with community safety concerns
  • Resolve disputes
  • Attend/investigate accidents

The possibilities of this role

  • Manage flexible and agile teams according to demand for police services.
  • Rise up the ranks. General duties officers are sworn in as a Probationary Constable before progressing to a Senior Constable, Sergeant, Senior Sergeant, providing lots of opportunities for career progression.
  • Mentor others in your team or act as a community liaison.
  • Learn specialist skills in fields such as the Critical Incident Response Team, Highway Patrol or Forensics.

About You 

There is no one key attribute, skill or experience that Victoria Police looks for in our Police Officer candidates. Instead, it’s your overall suitability for the role. 

  • 18 years or older 
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Healthy level of fitness
  • Experience working in team environments
  • Australian Citizen or hold Australian permanent residency to join Victoria Police. New Zealand Citizens must have a Special Category Visa and live in Australia to submit an application
  • An Australian driver’s licence, can be either manual or automatic. A probationary licence is acceptable

  • Paid Training: You will be paid to train and learn as a recruit from day one at the Victoria Police Academy.
  • Competitive Salary: Once you are sworn in as a constable you will be paid $75,604 plus allowances per annum. In addition, there are shift penalties and overtime payments available.
  • Work/Life balance: Shift work can provide benefits that office hours can’t – such as being able to drop the kids off at school, take on part-time studies or catch up with friends and family
  • Career Progression: Specialise in as little as two years and receive training and support to progress through the ranks. 
  • Allowances and Leave: Receive up to nine weeks recreation leave, 16 weeks parental leave, study leave, long-service leave and additional superannuation.

You may be required to work at any location within Victoria as determined by Victoria Police. While station preferences will be taken into account, placement to a station is subject to a vacancy being available and operational needs. You will not be placed at a country station during your probationary period unless you nominate to be.
