The SPHERE Cancer CAG team is based across the Ingham Institute, the University of New South Wales, and the Garvan Institute. We collaborate closely with South Western and South Eastern Sydney Local Health Districts.
Our opportunity
The SPHERE Cancer CAG (Clinical Academic Group) was established in 2017. The Cancer CAG sits within a collaborative framework that incorporates four health networks and more than 30 health, education, and research sites across the state.
The Cancer CAG established 4 key focus areas of research: 1) bringing omics into clinical practice, 2) living better with and after cancer, 3) poor outcomes cancers, and 4) reducing unwanted clinical practice variation.
We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to join the Maridulu Budyari Gumal (SPHERE) (CAG). The position will support the reducing unwanted clinical practice variation area of research and will co-ordinate activities within that area including all requirements.
Some of the duties and responsibilities in this role will include:
- Contribute to the research and development of clinical informatics capability in relation to observational cancer data research platforms.
- Contribute to open-source development of research data models and tools.
- Use natural language processing to transform and analyse research data repositories.
- Work closely with a Senior Research Fellow to lead technological innovations in developing practical clinical and research applications.
- Design, develop and lead collaborative research that supports the Area of Focus BIG Ideas, ensuring all research is conducted to methodological and ethical standards.
- Lead the preparation, research analysis, and produce/contribute to conference abstracts and publications for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
- Conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently or as a member of a team.
- Establish a personal research portfolio and start developing independent research proposals.
- Complete administrative functions primarily connected to area of research.
- Mentor, guide and support HDR students, where appropriate and support their research efforts and continuing development.

Essential Criteria:
- Completed PhD or equivalent research higher degree.
- Experience in curation and analysis of large datasets and handling of clinical data.
- Significant technical expertise in modern data analytic techniques.
- Ability to collaborate with clinical partners to ensure project validity.
- Proven ability in working effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with all levels of staff, students, management, collaborators, and members of the public.
- Commitment to ongoing training and development.
Desirable Criteria:
- Proven track record in publishing scientific research / open source software, demonstrated experience in grant writing, ethics submissions, data analysis.
- Experience supervising technical staff and students.
- Demonstrated experience with oncology-specific practices and data.
- Python language expertise with specific familiarity with machine learning, natural language processing and data engineering pipelines.
