About the opportunity

Southern Cross University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering delivers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the areas of Engineering Systems, Information Technology and Science.

The SCU Bee Research and Extension Laboratory (BREL) has been established within the Faculty to address the pressing issue of the varroa mite incursion and significant skills shortages in the Australian honey and pollination industries.

BREL plays a pivotal role in increasing the industrys capacity to combat varroa mites by focusing on a breeding program for varroa resistance, undergraduate and postgraduate education and training, and industry collaboration and Extension.

This position will lead cutting-edge research projects on integrated pest management and queen bee breeding, focusing on developing varroa mite-resistant honey bee stock. The role will have some flexibility to explore a specific area of interest, focusing on broadening the research within the field. Core responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate with national and international collaborators to design, conduct and publish experiments both locally and in Pacific Island Countries .
  • Co-supervise HDR students in the Lab, and engage directly with beekeepers through participation in industry R&D programs, via extension and training in the universities research apiary and connecting with students and regional beekeepers via the SCU Bee Club.
  • Communicate research findings through presentations, reports, and publications, and engage in scientific outreach and knowledge dissemination.
  • Contribute to grant proposal development, seeking external funding opportunities to support ongoing research project funding and the sustainability of the Lab.
About you

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated individual eager to make a meaningful impact in conducting practical, industry-focused research for the honey and pollination sectors in Australia and Pacific Island nations. The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in a relevant field (entomology, genetics, or biology) with a proven knowledge in honey bee biology, genetics and breeding techniques. You will be reliable and highly motivated and will benefit from a supportive team that is invested in providing opportunities for them to achieve their aspirations. In addition, you will have:

  • Strong analytical skills and proven experience conducting independent research, with evidence of an emerging publication track record.
  • Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.
  • Experience in the design, establishment, and maintenance of laboratory and field experiments and the measurement, recording and analysis of associated data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of established University stakeholders in Australia and overseas.
The successful candidate will also require a valid passport with the ability to travel between all partner countries engaged with the Laboratory’s research.
Salary and benefits

  • Located at Lismore, NSW 2480.
  • Academic Level B. The base salary ranges from $105,344 - $124,585 per annum, plus 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation. The total remuneration package is up to $145,764.
