Principal Advisor, Navigation Safety
$167,626 - $177,834 + 15.4% super

ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Head of Navigation and Communications Systems, the Principal Advisor, Navigation Safety will lead a team responsible for policy and planning matters related to the safe navigation of ships in Australian waters.
You will provide sound policy and regulatory advice, underpinned by high level subject matter expertise. People and resource management, team leadership and developing high level written material are key aspects of this role.
You will be responsible for:

  • Leading a team that provides specialist subject matter advice on navigational safety issues. These include:
  • Aids to navigation and positioning, navigation and timing systems (PNT), with a focus on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and PNT resilience;
  • Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Electronic Charting Systems (ECS) and other shipboard navigational aids; and
  • Vessel Traffic Services and coastal pilotage matters.
  • Representing Australia nationally and internationally, including leading delegations to forums of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other relevant bodies.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:
  • Extensive maritime experience, particularly in navigation, at a senior level.
  • Maritime-related tertiary qualification or equivalent.
  • Thorough knowledge of the navigational aids outlined in the 'About the role' section.
  • A good understanding of the working of peak international organisations such as IMO and IALA.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
