We have a great leadership opportunity as a Principal Engineer to provide Process and Functional Safety technical guidance and assurance to reduce material risk exposure for Fixed Assets across Rio Tinto Iron Ore. This requires partnership and communication with a diverse range of stakeholders including projects, engineering, autonomous technology, and site maintenance and operations teams.

Reporting to the Manager Process and Functional Safety within the Operational and Technical support division of Iron Ore and working in a challenging and exciting environment, you will:

• Ensure appropriate systems and processes are implemented, maintained and impactful to adequately manage this major hazard
• Provide Process and Functional Safety governance to:

• Review performance against the standard and escalate gaps to required performance criteria
• Assess and report on the effectiveness of key controls (permanent and temporary)
• Authorize changes with Process and Functional Safety impacts (permanent and temporary), verifying effective change management and interim control effectiveness
• Provide Process and Functional Safety support to engineering activities as required
• Inform first and second line assurance plans in line with material risks and critical control effectiveness
• Coach project and operations teams on the requirements of the standard and how to meet the relevant requirements
• Develop and implement actions which improve critical control effectiveness

• Experience in Functional (or Process) Safety within mining or resources industry, with knowledge of relevant codes, standards & statutory requirements
• Stakeholder engagement skills to effectively communicate requirements, challenges, and improvements
• Ability to partner effectively to identify and pursue opportunities for improvement
• Proactive mindset to address both strategic and technical challenges
• Tertiary qualifications in Electrical/Mechatronic/Mechanical/Chemical Engineering and/or a related discipline
• Functional Safety qualification is highly desirable
