About the Role

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, your focus is to provide your technical expertise to WA Major Projects in leading engineering strategies, standards and frameworks that ensure the engineering process and design is optimised and enables safe, efficient construction, commissioning and operation.

Reporting to the Manager Standards and Technical, your accountabilities include:
 

  • Conduct engineering tasks, verify construction methodologies and advise on engineering decisions for projects in alignment with Project, Construction, Commissioning and Engineering Standards.
  • Employ specific/relevant mechanical and piping engineering expertise and leadership to meet BHP's technical expectations.
  • Apply an understanding of mechanical and piping engineering related terminology, theory, key processes and activities.
  • Determine the underlying cause of problems and evaluate multiple solutions to ensure a planned and structured approach to solving complex problems. 
  • Mitigate people, community, environmental and climate risks across the value chain, in alignment with public policy and our sustainability and climate commitments. 
  • Identify, engage and manage a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prioritise work effort and resources accordingly. 
  • Identify and assess risks, make risk informed decisions, use BHP's risk management framework and build a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes. 
  • Engage the capabilities of the entire organisation.

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

  • Demonstrated technical experience and expertise in Asset or Major Projects including design and engineering processes and experience specific to the mechanical and piping disciplines.
  • Demonstrated deep engineering and design governance experience, including the application of sustainability in design processes and implementation of International, Australian and BHP Standards and procedures. 
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and communicate highly technical themes and acumen within diverse high performing teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing complex judgement and analytical ability for problem resolution.
  • Demonstrate a base understanding of other inter-related engineering disciplines.
  • Hold a minimum qualification of Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical).


While not mandatory but desirable:
 

  • Experience in engineering management, commissioning, operational readiness, Site operations or maintenance/reliability.
  • Eligible for Chartered Professional Engineer status with Engineers Australia.
  • Previous site-based experience in Iron Ore or other bulk materials handling, mineral processing facilities, process and non-process piping systems and engineering projects.

Location and Roster

You will be based in Perth, Western Australia, in the multi award winning office tower - ‘City Square’. You will have stunning river views from your modern open plan office, state of the art facilities including virtual whiteboards and video conferencing facilities, 550 bicycle racks with ample lockers, showers and change room amenities and a large outdoor terrace with barbecues. 

You will be working on Monday-Friday roster, where occasional site travel may require. Flexible work is also offered.
