We are looking for a policy advisor with a talent for legislative review and excellent writing skills to work across all business units at OIC.
You will love research and apply your skills to analyse, identify risks and options, and prepare submissions, briefings, reports and correspondence on complex legislative and policy issues regarding right to information and information privacy.
This position plays a key strategic role, working closely with members of ELT and providing authoritative advice on complex and emerging legislative and policy issues.
The key functions of the Principal Policy Officer include:

  • Undertaking research (including legal research) and analysis, identifying risks and options, and preparing submissions, briefings, reports and correspondence on complex legislative and policy issues regarding right to information and information privacy.
  • Developing written submissions on behalf of the Information Commissioner and support Commissioners in appearances before Parliamentary Committees and such other policy review forums as required.
  • Implement projects as directed including working collaboratively with OIC teams to lead and manage cross-agency projects to achieve the OIC's strategic goals.
  • Liaise with Queensland government agencies including departments, local government, universities, Hospital and Health Services, public authorities and organisations from other jurisdictions and the community regarding projects as required.
  • Represent the OIC as required at meetings and forums with stakeholders.
  • Provide assistance, support and contribution to the OIC Privacy Unit, including identifying strategic and systemic privacy issues and risks arising from privacy complaints and notifications and exercise sound decision making to respond to those issues.

OIC is an independent integrity agency that reports to Parliament. Our vision is an informed Queensland that values and respects information rights and responsibilities. We have a statutory role under the Right to Information (RTI) Act and the Information Privacy (IP) Act to facilitate greater and easier access to information held by government agencies. We also assist agencies to understand their obligations under the IP Act to safeguard personal information that they hold. Our office reviews agency decisions about access to information, mediates privacy complaints, and monitors and reports on agency compliance to Parliament.
