About the Role

As part of a growing mandate, we have some exciting opportunities for enthusiastic and dynamic individuals to join our team and support our activities for decarbonisation and development in BHP’s product value chains.  We use our deep technical knowledge to differentiate BHP’s thought leadership, bring idealism and innovation to drive our partnerships and the wider industry towards better outcomes.
Reporting to the Manager Sustainability, Marketing, these positions play a pivotal role in supporting the execution of our Climate Strategy and Scope 3 Action Plan as well as providing coordination and technical subject matter expertise to BHP’s Partners, Assets and Group functions across a range of initiatives.

 

Key accountabilities:

  • Support BHP’s Climate Strategy and Scope 3 Action Plan to achieve our medium-term goal of supporting industry to develop technologies and pathways capable of 30 per cent emissions intensity reduction in integrated steelmaking by: 
  • Managing projects towards BHP’s product value chain activities, coordinating technical programs with customers, service providers, equipment suppliers, universities and other R&D institutes;
  • Providing techno-economic modelling and other analysis to support partnerships and internal business decisions;
  • Monitoring industry developments and technology changes in iron and steel making and key sectors related to abatement of carbon emissions, such as CCUS, and assess the impact on BHPs portfolio, markets and customers.

 

In addition, the role will also contribute to:

  • Supporting the business by working with Commercial and Portfolio Strategy & Development teams in the development and execution of Commercial and Technical initiatives; 
  • Participating in cross-functional projects, summarizing technical information and insights into commercial opportunities to support productivity projects across the business;
  • Continually monitoring networks and internal and external data sources to increase knowledge of industry trends, market dynamics, peer group performance. 

About You

  • Bachelor's degree or higher, and/or at least 7 years’ experience in a key technical discipline in/or closely related to the iron and steel industry
  • Deep understanding, and direct experience of modelling, R&D and/or operations, in either conventional or alternate iron and steel making processes, electric furnace metallurgy or carbon capture technologies
  • Commercially-minded with an ability to apply strategic thinking to solve complex problems and translate technical and other information into business outcomes;
  • Experienced in engaging effectively with and influencing internal and external stakeholders at various organizational levels including executives;
  • Project planning and execution skills that enable effective identification, prioritization and delivery of critical work through coordination of cross discipline and cross culture teams;
  • Ideal candidates may also have industry or management consulting experience and be multilingual with English and Chinese and / or Japanese language skills
