Sibanye Stillwater Australia, a subsidiary of Sibanye Stillwater Limited (a multinational mining and metals processing group), is a leading mining, tailings management, and economic rehabilitation company. Our flagship Century project in Queensland stands as Australia's largest tailings remining and processing operation.

A rewarding opportunity currently exists for a Process Control Systems Engineer to join the team based on site at our Karumba Port Operations. 

This position will be offered on a 16/12 day-shift roster (FIFO), or 5/2 (residential) basis located in the popular tourist town of Karumba, QLD. 

In this diverse and dynamic role reporting to the Superintendent Port Operations, you will be responsible to provide leadership and technical support to the electrical personnel to maintain and improve site Control Systems through continual monitoring and proactive communications with maintenance and operational personnel to facilitate optimal plant performance to achieve safe production targets.  

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Develop and participate in overall planning and execution of the Distributed Control System (DCS) Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems modifications.
  • Provide expert technical knowledge on Process Control Systems, standards, and specialised maintenance for plant improvement.
  • Perform breakdown response, corrective maintenance and configuration on the Process Control system and identifying improvement opportunities.
  • Undertake technical investigations, reporting and recommendations.
  • Develop business case for modification, component replacement and maintenance strategy change
  • Resolve operational or technical equipment problems to minimise processing interruptions resulting from equipment breakdowns/failures. 
  • Software engineering, including PLC programming and application development.
  • Undertake Testing, debugging and maintenance of software.
  • Configure, test and commission control system equipment.
  • Fault-find control system hardware and associated electrical/mechanical equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation including specifications, diagrams, operator manuals, test plans and procedures. 
  • Develop and manage the maintenance strategy to achieve plant reliability targets to ensure production targets are delivered, where possible exceeded.
  • Ensure that port operations maintenance activities are efficiently managed consistent with the Company’s standards and statutory requirements.
  • Develop rolling short, medium and long term maintenance programmes into daily/weekly/ monthly/annual maintenance plans.
  • Ensuring appropriate oversight is in place for contractors engaged in port facilities for having assigned work completed safely, on time and within budget.
  • Support the development of maintenance budget and manage expenditure to within budget levels maintaining a cost focus culture.

  • Comply with legislative requirements, company policies, procedures, and management systems.

Ideally, applicants will possess the following technical skills, knowledge, and qualifications:

  • Minimum 4 years demonstrated technical experience and competence within a Controls systems environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Associate Diploma in a Computing or Engineering Discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical, Instrumentation).
  • Strong knowledge and experience within the mineral processing field.
  • DCS (Foxboro), PLC (Rockwell) and SCADA knowledge and skills.
  • Sequence and control function diagram understanding and use.
  • Electrical and Instrumentation experience.
  • CMMS experience such as Pronto or SAP advantageous.
  • A solid understanding of Data engineering or Data science techniques is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience meeting deadlines whilst managing emerging priorities.
  • Thorough understanding of programming across a broad range of languages
  • Experience in programming industrial controllers.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills for Control Systems.
  • OH&S and environmental practice awareness promotion.
  • Demonstrate effective performance in achieving agreed goals that support the department site and company standards.
  • Team player with the ability to maintain internal and external relationships.
  • Current C Class Manual Drivers licence.
